"Fodor's Scotland" is the 22nd and latest edition of a very useful guide for planning a vacation to Scotland. It is heavily focused on providing the facts on travel, accomodation, dining, and things to see and do in the fascinating land that is Scotland.
The guide is organized by region, with useful descriptions of Scotland's many natural and historical attractions. Scotland's capital of Edinburgh gets special emphasis. The format lends itself to building trip itineraries. The regional breakdowns include suggestions for accomodation and dining, along with price ranges. Readers should note that Fodors tends to lean to the high end on accomodations. Other features in the guide address special events, golf, Scottish culture, and the practicalities of getting around.
Planning ahead may pay dividends for the visitor. Even in a major city such as Edinburgh, the presence of various festivals can crowd out the casual traveler. In the Highlands, where tourist infrastructure is very limited, the unexpected presence of, say, a Highland Games celebration may overwhelm the available hospitality of a small town or village. On the plus side, the Scottish Highlands contain some of the best remaining open spaces in Europe, and are well worth the trip.
"Fodor's Scotland" lacks photographs or other illustrations beyond some excellent map graphics. The maps themselves are not necessarily suited to detailed navigation. Even in a 500 page book, the amount of detail is limited; thorough planners are encouraged to follow up on various listed web sites for further information. These minor complaints aside, "Fodor's Scotland" is highly recommended to those plannng a visit to Scotland.
