Book Description

1 Nov 2012 Fodor's Rome
Rome is more than ever bursting at the seams with newly unleashed vitality. Just in time for 2012's 2 million American visitors is all-color, photo-packed "Fodor's Rome, " revealing the "festa romana" that is the pulse of the Eternal City. If proof were needed that Romans are switching into the fast lane, just check out Fodor's "new Rome" wrap-up. Expanded Coverage: Look for expanded write-ups of the hot and hip neighborhoods of Pigneto and San Lorenzo, the latest architectural landmarks (the Casa della Ballo and Casa del Cinema), and more avant-garde sites. Illustrated Features: Rome is one of Europe's most resplendent cities, so it is no wonder Fodor's selected it for full-color treatment. Our "In-Focus" magazine-style illustrated features take in everything from archaeological sites to the Vatican to the coolest neighborhoods. The guide showcases the ancient city in "Rome Was Not Built in a Day," then skips to the city's hippest scene-arena in "Life is a Piazza." For Rome at its High-Renaissance best, and insights on how the 17th--century city of spectacle was created, toggle from the section "Agony and Ecstasy: The Sistine Ceiling" to "Baroque and Desperate: The Tragic Rivalry of Bernini and Borromini." A first for Fodor's: our photo-rich chapter, "Roamin' Holiday," has theme walks that immerse the reader in three especially evocative stretches of the city. Indispensable Trip Planning Tools "Fodor's Rome" consummately fits the bill on both a practical and cultural basis. Detail-packed "Getting Oriented" sections, with plenty of hands-on coaching, introduce all nine sightseeing neighborhoods. The "Experience Rome" chapter is loaded with valuable advice, such as tips on how to explore Rome like the locals do, and "Beating the Euro." With neighborhood hotel charts, eight photo-spotlit dining districts, and more restaurant and hotel reviews than Frommer's, "Fodor's Rome" handily trumps the competition. Discerning Recommendations: Fodor's Rome offers savvy advice and recommendations from local writers to help travelers make the most of their time. Fodor's Choice designates our best picks, from hotels to nightlife. "Word of Mouth" quotes from fellow travelers provide valuable insights. PULLOUT MAP: A handy take-along map provides added value, giving travelers essential information about top attractions, walking tours, and nearby dining so they can travel with confidence.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointed 27 Dec 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
It has far too many unnecessary photos which spoil any serious travel guide. Why oh why do I need colour pictures of The Sistine Chapel? Doh? Please keep it serious Mr Fodor!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best guide book to Rome! 17 Nov 2012
By All things kitchen - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Fodors Rome is the only guide book I will take to Rome next year. I used the 2006 edition for several trips and was quick to purchase this one for future trips. It is laid out in a simple clear way with readable maps. It organizes lodgings and sites according to neighborhoods. This is key because Rome is so big and sprawling that in order to efficiently see the many sites it is best to approach this by focusing on neighborhoods.....Fodors does this for you....with a star recommended system that helps you figure out what the best and most important sites, hotels, restaurants are.It is a comprehensive guide book that covers all my needs and interests.

4.0 out of 5 stars Straightforward guide offering area by area itineraries 15 Dec 2013
By Kodiak reader - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I liked that this book tackles Rome in a series of daily by-the-area itineraries suitable for a person who can spend about a week or more. There are maps of each neighborhood, each clearly marking the major sights/sites with suggested itineraries in some cases. Map and text include notations of "Fodor Favorites", which ensures you at least considered the selection in ranking must sees. Excellent (interpretive) coverage of the art in the Sistine Chapel as well as for Vatican museums. I chose this book as we plan to go to Tivoli and Ostia Antica and this includes complete information & transportation for these in-the-area visits. It also includes a trip to the Castela Romana area just south and east of Rome best visited by car. The table of contents also has a separate listing for maps, which will be useful.

Helpful, up to date information makes this guide a useful tool in planning for a vacation visit to Rome. Maps, overviews, and specific details concerning must-see sights such as times, prices, and history are the most valuable elements.
