Book Description

7 Aug 2003
'Focusing' is a technique first developed 25 years ago by American psychologist and philosopher Eugene Gendlin. Hugely influential, it offers six specific steps you can take to open up your inner world of deeper feelings and intuition - and shows you how to listen to others with more empathy. Short, very accessible yet also profound, this book is even more relevant today than it was when originally published.

Review

"Focusing is a beautiful and meditative approach to psychotherapy and personal growth. It offers a deep parallel to the practice of mindfulness in a carefully developed and sensitive way." (Jack Kornfield)

"Learning to access and dissolve personal problems by focusing on the language and wisdom of the body was a historic discovery. Gendlin's genius has stood the test of time and Focusing has become a classic." (Harville Hendrix)

"The focusing skill can be learned by anyone in or out of therapy" (Washington Post)

"An original, innovative, exciting book" (Carl Rogers)

"At once a manual and a philosophy. It talks about the body's wisdom, the steps of the focusing technique, and how to discover the richness in others by learning to listen. It looks at the potential for a new kind of relationship and a new kind of society" (Marilyn Ferguson, author of The Aquarian Conspiracy)

5.0 out of 5 stars Mans search for meaning meets dna activation 27 Feb 2007
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The search is over for a book which gives clearly defined steps to understanding the inner self. It takes the concept of emotional and spiritual intelligence, prayer, meditation, ancient and modern philosophy and combines them into a meaningful way to address emotional disturbances. The process is surprisingly pain free and can be done virtually anywhere you can get away with closing your eyes for 5 minutes. All I need now is a book on motivation to get into the habit of going through the process more often.

Format:Mass Market Paperback
Having read the recommendation for this book via a "Mega Brain" article, I can truthfully say that this book does deliver the goods - even if a little practice is required! Unlike other books, this is a practical guide and as such is written in a very approachable style with plenty of examples, backed up with what to do if nothing is happening!! This is definately one book that exceeds its monetary value.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a brilliant find. 23 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I can't rave enough about how much this book has helped me. I was using a lot of mediation (mindfulness) to help me through my on going problems but since I have started using the techniques in this book I have had more progress in the past month than I have had in years and I have tried a lot of things! Try it. U won't regret it. If u have done meditation in the past I think it helps as this book focuses on energy movements within the body and I felt I could get in tune with myself a lot quicker than if I had never focused on any kind of meditation at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Helpful. 30 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Just been diving into this book. It is a great book for therapists and clients. The book is very practical in its approach with enough examples to make it very clear.
It is very readable. This book will be of interests to qualified therapists and the general reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Focusing re The Light 5 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
I am a Quaker and found Focusiing extrememly useful in connection with my experience of The Experiment with Light, although Gedlin's approach is in no way religious. The book is short, practical, persuasive and easy to read, although the author's impressive academic credentials shine through.

The concepts of a 'felt sense' and a 'handle' resonate with my experience, and I appreciated his recognition of both the value of rationalisation as a tool for action, and its limitations as an agent of psychological change.

2.0 out of 5 stars CD Version is an abridged version of the book 31 Jan 2002
By Mr. P. A. King VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
The CD version of Focusing is basically an abridged update of the book with the author reading about his experiences (straight from the book). I was quite disappointed and was expecting it to be an addition to his earlier works. It Could be OK for those who do not have time to read his book properly - but if you do have time - Read the book it is more appealing and allows you the time to consider what he is saying and to take the information in in your own time.

4.0 out of 5 stars simple and easy to follow advice 5 Feb 2010
By C. Cook
Format:Paperback
I have really enjoyed this book, especially after watching Gendlin on youtube.

He explains the concept of focusing clearly, and gives examples of how it has helped people he's worked with. He then goes on to explain techniques. This is all done in a step by step way, weaving in examples again to illustrate his points.

If you're interested in understanding mind/body links, this is a fantastic book!
