About the Author

Dr. Adam R. Nicholls is a sport and exercise psychologist registered with the Health Professions Council. He has been providing psychological support to professional, international and adolescent rugby players for several years. Additionally, Adam has published over 40 scientific papers in international journals on topics such as stress and coping, mental toughness, injury rehabilitation, and confidence. He has also edited a book on coping in sport. Many international rugby union players including those who have represented the British and Irish Lions, the New Zealand All Blacks, England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Fiji, and Hong Kong have participated in Adam s research, which gives him a unique insight into the psychology of participating in rugby at the highest level, which he shares with other players to help them be the best they can. Adam has the skills and experience to teach rugby players and coaches the most up-to-date psychological techniques for combating stress and reaching their potential on the field. On his test debut, Jon Callard landed the four penalty goals that helped England beat New Zealand 15-9 at Twickenham in 1993, the fourth of only six victories over the All Blacks to date. Five years later he scored all of Bath s points in the 19-18 win over Brive, which earned Bath the accolade of being the first English club to lift the Heineken Cup. Jon s coaching career dates back to 1998, when he was appointed assistant to Andy Robinson at Bath, then became head coach two years later, and served a spell as Leeds Carnegie s first team coach in 2002. A former physical education and science teacher at Downside, Jon played six times for the Barbarians from 1994 to 1997 and as a specialist fullback for Bath. His 2,087 points from 210 matches contributed hugely to Bath s triumphs, including four Twickenham cup final victories and five Courage League titles between 1990 and 1996. Educated at Bassaleg School in Newport and St Paul s College in Cheltenham, he played for the Black & Ambers of Newport for five years from the age of 17 before signing for Bath. His mentors at the Rec were Jack Rowell and Brian Ashton, both of whom went on to coach England.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great book 9 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback
I loved this book as it takes away all the complications and mystery around the perceptions surrounding Sports Psychology and how it can be applied to a sport such as rugby. Because it is easy to think of rugby being played by tough individuals, it is easy to forget that there is only a certain amount of toughness that can be gained from the gym and the training ground. This book will help add that extra toughness that comes through thinking what needs to be achieved and then giving you the tools and techniques to go out and achieve them. What this book does that really adds a special touch is the insight provided by Jon Callard that helps bring each section to life by providing real-life situations and examples (from somebody who really has "been there, seen it and bought the T-Shirt"). It doesn't matter at what level you are playing rugby, there is something in this book for everyone to take away and build upon that will help improve their game and their impact within the team.

Not only is it an incredibly easy book to read, but I believe that if followed correctly, the lessons laid out in this book will allow the reader to become focused for life as well as becoming "Focused for Rugby".

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and beneficial 21 Jun 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I have always been a little dubious about the benefit of sports psychology away from an elite level. However, a team-mate lent me his copy after he found it so helpful and I have been delighted to be proven wrong. This is a very interesting read and provides ideas and approaches which could be of benefit to players and coaches at all levels of the pyramid.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read 20 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback
Great book where I enjoyed having both the expertise of a sport psychologist and a professional sportsman. I have read many sport psychology books and this is one of most user friendly I have come across. Being able to download the exercise sheets is something I had not come across before and great to use with players in sessions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book 19 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback
I think that this is a must read for any rugby player or coach who wants to be the best player they can be. It shows you how to apply different mental skills to rugby in a manner that is very easy to understand. It also provides some assessment questionnaires that allow you to measure you own abilities. I think these will be very helpful especially if you want to monitor how your mental skills change over time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Focused for Ruggers 19 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback
I thought this book was really informative. I thought the chapters on preparation and leadership were really useful, as I have sometimes struggled to prepare properly, because I did not know what I should be doing. The tables that have allowed me to structure my preparation will really help.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant for all levels 18 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback
I was amazed when we came across this book. Our boys at present are 9 and 10 years old, they love rugby and play 7 times a week in season. They read this book from beginning to end (obvioulsy they needed some help from me in areas)and really enjoyed it, they also gained such a lot from it in terms of focus and the practical examples given for planning and practice. The brilliant aspect to this book is that it is understandable and interesting for any level, their uncle who has played rugby for twenty years also read the book and he loved it too! Really motivating and helpful book - buy it!
