Billed as the beautiful art of paper folding, the software comes on one disk. Installation was straight forward (50 Mb required). Counter-intuitively, the instructions were printed in the back of the case wrapper. Minimum specs are x4 CD drive , 128 Mb memory, Pentium 2 333, 800 x 600 16 colour display. Runs on Win 98, Me and XP. Colour printer not essential, but recommended. Sound card also not essential, but recommended.

The program starts up with a display of model types to choose from, these are :
46 birds, 44 animals, 17 trees and plants, 16 boxes and flash-lights, 14 planes, 16 ships, 63 miscellaneous, 23 clothes (total 239 models). These are all traditional models.

Double clicking on a type graphic brings up the graphics of individual models, 15 per page. There are no written descriptions, only the graphics. Double clicking on a model graphic brings up a new design box which has to have a name typed in and OK'ed before the next screen will appear. This new screen shows the coloured arrangement on the paper. Double clicking on the paper fires up the graphics editor. It's quite a well furnished editor with lots of tools to experiment with.

After editing and printing (or not), by pressing "description" on the menu bar, the folding instructions are brought up. These are in Windows help file format. The diagram system used is close to the international system. Key words in the explanatory text are linked to master symbols documents. I view the master symbols sheets as a weakness, several errors have crept in and it's unclear on several points. Each step has a black and white drawing and a coloured drawing next to it with the program suggested design. There is no animation.

At first sight, the models look garish and distinctly off-putting. Maybe this is a matter of personal taste. Once over the initial shock, the quantity and range of models provide good value. There are occasional errors in the folding instructions. ("cupboard fold" was described as "kite fold" on one model.)

I can't wholeheartedly recommend this CD. Beginners, presumably the target audience, will struggle to master the folding from the explanations given and more experienced folders will find the emphasis on colouring the paper gets in the way. It is, though, good value if you are prepared to overlook the weaknesses.
