Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

MP3 for Dummies is a program designed to help beginners get to grips with the wonderful world of digital music by allowing them to make copies of their favourite CD tracks for playback on a PC or by copying to a portable hardware player like, for example, Creative Labs' MuVo.

Load the software, pop a CD in your computer's CD-ROM drive and the tracklist will appear on the screen. Mark the tracks you want to copy and then click either the MP3 or WAV button. Most of the time you'll use the MP3 option because this copies each track using a clever technology that strips out the bits of sound the human ear can't hear, and reduces the amount of space the resulting file takes up. Using this method even an average home computer can be used to store and play back thousands of songs. Alternatively you can create WAV files, suitable for copying back out to a blank CD that you can then play on your stereo; the program can also convert MP3 songs that you download from the Internet into WAVs as well. Finally, it comes with a player program that allows you to listen to your songs and compile them into play lists.

There's no doubt that this does the job and is very easy to use. However, Windows has for some time included a free program called Media Player that's able to do something very similar, much more quickly and--if you've got an Internet connection--can search a huge online database of CD titles and tracks and automatically fill in their details for you. MP3 for Dummies offers nothing like this and if you want to name your tracks, you'll have to do it from within Windows Explorer. Fans of the For Dummies series of programs will feel comfortable with this but really, it's worth trying out the Windows Media Player before you decide. --Rob Beattie

1.0 out of 5 stars You'll be a dummy for buying this!, 8 Nov 2003

I purchased this disc hoping to convert some of my own recorded songs to MP3 cd's. This proveed to be a total waste of time and money as I couldn't get the software to operate on any of my three comptuer systems.

Buy a better piece of software such as Cakewalk Pyro or similar.

3.0 out of 5 stars There are cheaper alternatives, 29 May 2004
I bought this CD and found that it worked great converting my CD's into MP3 format; until I upgraded o Windows XP.
The program DOES NOT WORK ON WINDOWS XP.
If you are still running Windows ME, 98 or 95, by all means buy it now - the user interface is unrivalled - It is extremely easy for anyone to use.
IF you are running any version of Windows, why not try out the completely free CDex, which you can download from www.download.com. The user interface is more difficult, but it is more powerful, as you can change the bit-rate of the songs (the quality).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great and simple to use., 16 Jul 2004
I'm sorry, but the other reiews I've read are WRONG!!!

I bought this program afgter reading a few of the "for Dummies" books, expecting it to do what it says - IT DOES!

I'm running Windows XP on my desktop computer and the program installs and runs brilliantly! There are no issues or problems, just a few clicks and the program is installed and running. I bought this program because I have a MP3 stereo in my car, and there have been no problems whatsoever. I've put 21 cd's worth of tracks through this software and back onto cd for my stereo and there are no problems with reading the disc, etc.

One thing the "for Dummies" series of books and software do is keep it simple. This program is the simplest music converion software I have ever used. All you need to do is put a cd in the drive, and by clicking on what you want to convert to mp3 and a couple of other click, the program does its job. It also converts the other way too - great for if you download mp3 from the net and want it for your regular stereo system.

It's fast and easy to use - what else do you want the program to do??? It converts to MP3!!!

How can anyone not give this five stars. The price is excellent, the program is quick and simple to use - no whistles and bells, just does its specific job.

If you have loads of cd's and want them converting to mp3 on your pc - buy this piece of software. You won't be dissappointed.
