Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
101 Languages of the World has been around for a while with an unrivalled offering of languages in a single product, and this latest edition installs quickly and easily, and runs without the CD-ROM after installation. You simply tick the languages you want available on your computer, and the relevant files are installed to your hard drive so you can tidy away the CD-ROMs (of which there are four!) and run everything with ease later on.

There are differing amounts of resources for each language, with the most popular languages supported by a wealth of material, while the less commonly taught / learnt languages having fewer. For example, Russian includes an impressive 24 conversational topics, while Scottish Gaelic has just 10. The resources themselves consist of passages and dialogues which you are completely interactive - click on a word to hear it spoken individually, read its translation, and see a translation of the whole sentence with the word in context. It's a very in-depth way to look at a text, and a good way to focus on vocabulary. It's probably not such a good way to learn a language from scratch, and you'd probably need a basic coursebook as well - but it's a really excellent way to get some extra practice and supplement your learning.

Each of the learning units comes with traditional learning / consolidation games like crosswords, jumbled letters and dictations. There's also the chance to record / compare your own pronunciation against that of a native speaker too. They're features which have been around in language learning software for some time, and the software is by no means cutting edge and can feel a bit old-fashioned and clunky at times, but it's solid, tried and tested stuff, and it works, which is what counts.

One nice extra feature is a set of reference help files on grammar in many of the languages included. Also, a handy customisable flashcards app is bundled with the software - 'Before You Know It' comes pre-loaded with flashcards in some very obscure tongues, but you can download / create your own sets too, so it's a nice resource for any language.

All in all, it's a really exhaustive set of resources for anyone interested in languages and having a dabble. There's certainly enough material to keep budding linguists happy for some time!

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Sure you can't go in-depth with this software like you could with a single course in one specific language but the tools at your disposal here are quite fantastic. For someone who regularly travels to different places or holidays somewhere new every year, this is a fantastic piece of kit for learning some of the local lingo. There is no real structured learning plan, so if you want to come to grips with a whole language in an obvious and structured way, this isn't the product for you. You just really dive in and learn what you want here. The amount of languages included is quite staggering!

A list of the languages with full text, audio, dialogues and games : Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Afrikaans, Albanian, Arabic, Azerbaijani, Basque, Belorussian, Bengali, Brazilian Portuguese, Breton, Bulgarian, Canadian French, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English for Spanish Speakers, Esperanto, Estonian, Farsi, Finnish, Flemish, Galician, Greek, Guarani, Haitian Creole, Hawaiian, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Indonesian, Irish, Korean, Latin, Latvian, Lithuanian, Luganda, Luxembourgish, Malagasy, Malay, Norwegian, Pidgin English, Polish, Portuguese (European), Quechua, Romanian, Russian, Scottish Gaelic, Serbian, Slovak, Slovene, Somali, Sotho, Swahili, Swedish, Tagalog, Tahitian, Thai, Tswana, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, Vietnamese, Welsh, Wolof, Xhosa, Yiddish, Yoruba, Zulu.

The other languages included in the 'Vocabulary of the World' section : Asturian, Aymara, Bemba, Blackfoot, Cebuano, Chamorro, Cornish, Ecuadorian Quechua, Faroese, Frisian, Inuktitut, Kongo, Macedonian, Maori, Maya, Mohawk, Nahuatl, Papago, Provençal, Romany, Romansch, Ruanda, Samoan, Sepedi, Shona, Sicilian, Sorbian, Swazi, Tongan.

As you can see, some of the languages covered are *very* specialist and to be honest I've not even heard of some of them. For that alone, I must give this product 5-stars in my review!

Thoroughly recommended.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
First off, let me say I do really like this product. The vocabulary range and the useful phrases make this a fantastic choice for any semi-serious language learner. However, the four discs lead you through the hoops in order to load up the product. Either you download every language which takes up huge swathes of memory, or you pick your languages. The most commonly needed languages are not on one disc so you are forced to look at the contents and tick boxes then wait to see if your computer wants to download it properly!
Once set up has been negotiated a wealth of features await that are worth five stars, but the sheer difficulty of loading the software is the reason it is a four star package.
