Product Description

From Children's Software Revue®

What do you get if you mix a Saturday morning cartoon, a state-of-the-art video game, a box of LEGOs and the age-old game of chess? You get a very fun and engaging game of chess, nineties style! In fact, it's the best we've seen for kids to date. But only if you can get this program running on your computer. We tried three regular PCs before we found one that worked. Our advice with this program is to check the minimum hardware requirements carefully before you buy it. Make sure you've got a 3D Accelerator Card.

Here's how it works. First you sign in and choose from three challenge levels. We started at the easiest level and were pleased to find that it really is easy. Even a six-year old novice chess player was able to win a game. There are three very playful board themes to choose from- Wild West, Pirates and a traditional Staunton chess set, each featuring LEGO characters. When you make a move, the view zooms in to the board level and follows the piece as it moves- sort of like looking over the shoulder of the pawn as it advances toward the enemy. Each time a piece is captured, you are treated to a short slapstick vignette, starring the chess pieces. The vignettes are very "cool" at first, but after a bit, you just want to play some chess. Fortunately, there's an option where you can play the game from a top view of the board, which greatly speeds up the progress. Kids, however, enjoyed the over-the-shoulder battle view. There is also an Internet play option, which we did not try.

For a fun, very playful chess tutorial and game, this program is perfect.

Excellent game 6 Nov 2003
Format:CD-ROM
This has proved to be an excellent game and is much enjoyed by my 8 year old daughter, my 10 year old son and myself! Its easy to use and has encouraged us to play the board game as well, rather than just wanting to play on the computer. I would recommend it as a christimas present for any child (probably 6+).

It is a good chess game, but very straight for kids. It has tutorials, and when chess pieces attack it is all about cartoons, and about no bloods, no violence. Very nice for kids under 10 only.

It is not a war chess at all.

I (Tom, aged 6) love playing chess. I was given Lego Chess for my birthday last month. It is very, very, very good! You can play a story game, where the beginning of the story comes first, then you play the game, and then the story ends when you finish the game. If you win the game, one of the bad guys is caught in the story. There are three bad guys in the story, and three parts to the game (cowboys, indians, and pirates). When you resign (click on the white flag), the good guy accidentally catches himself. You can also play a quick game, or a game against another computer (I have not tried this yet). As you play the game, as you win or loose pieces, there are very good animations after they are captured. I recommend this game to anybody, but I don't know anyone my age who plays it yet.

Tom's mummy would like to add: He is fascinated by this game, and enjoys it just as much as playing real chess. His sister, who is 10, likes it,too.
