Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Learning to touch type is not the most exciting thing you will ever do. Touch typing is the sort of skill you try to convince yourself you don't need, while a voice at the back of your head keeps telling you otherwise. Just think: all that time you waste correcting typing errors, or searching the keyboard for the letter "j", could be saved up and used for something exciting, such as paragliding. You will be able to type while watching the screen, and people won't be able to laugh at your clumsy two-fingered technique.

Actually, although it may not be able to compete with paragliding for adrenaline-pumping excitement, learning to touch type can actually be quite fun. Focus Essential's Teach Yourself Touch Typing is a charming little package that could have you touch typing within a week. It includes an interactive game that helps to reinforce your memory of finger positions. Simply press the keys as indicated in the on-screen diagram. Not exactly Quake, but it does the job. First, though, you learn the correct finger positions by working through the various training and speed-building modules. On completion of the course, you take a series of tests and print out your own certificate. --Daren King

Manufacturer's Description

Do you sit at your keyboard for more than an hour each day? If so Teach Yourself Touch Typing will make an impact on your productivity, creativity and ability to communicate at all levels. The ability to type at speed is a skill that stays with you for life and in as little as 4 hours (probably 8 half-hour sessions) you will be touch typing on all the letters and common punctuation characters on a QWERTY keyboard.
This carefully constructed course combined with the patience and attentiveness of the computer will make the most of your precious learning time. With Teach Yourself Touch Typing it's like having your own expert tutor but at a fraction of the cost of live tuition.
Whether you're young or old, new to the keyboard or a seasoned two-fingered typist, Teach Yourself Touch Typing can and will work. All you have to do is to make time for regular sessions until you complete the course and then you'll have no need to keep looking at the keyboard.
Using its in-built artificial intelligence, if you are habitually making the same types of errors Teach Yourself Touch Typing will give you the appropriate guidance and custom built exercises to help correct the problem. On completion of the course you have the option to print out your own certificate, verifying the fact that you can touch type.

This is not the most elaborate program, it only does one thing: teach you how to type using 10 fingers and without looking at the keyboard. No 3d, no nice graphics, just plain study.
The concept is very simple, first you learn to type two letters, one for each index finger, then four, then more fingers and keys are added. After a while you notice that you can type all the letters of the keyboard, plus numbers, plus special characters, using 10 fingers. There are exercises to build your speed and emphasis is put on typing without mistakes.
You have the option to choose from a variety of English-language keyboards, so if you want to learn like I did, using a laptop where some keys are in odd places, you can do it.
If you are wondering: Yes, I am touch-typing now; no, I never tried it before using this software.
You won't be a fast typist after a couple of hours, speed builds up slowly, but typing is faster and much more fun now.

This programme will not run properly with Windows 2000 or XP. You will get the error message experienced by Miss Smith. After installing it, log on to the web site given in the brochure and download a patch. This is very quick and easy to do. It then works perfectly.

A marvellous course for those who are a bit slow to learn, which I am due to long-term illness. Helpful exercises are given for one's own specific difficulties. No fancy gimmicks, no pushing to go fast. The accent is on accuracy without looking at the keyboard, speed will come naturally with practice. Assessments after each exercise are honest and helpful (even the suggestion that I should rest and come back when my brain was less tired on one occasion when I was feeling very tired and muddled)!

What a relief after struggling with another fancy, multicolour gimmicky CD for the past year with little success. This feed-back is all typed without looking at the keyboard, at level 8 after a relatively short time.

I look forward to completing this course and trying other CD-ROMs in the series.
