1.0 out of 5 stars Great at first, but then... 3 Oct 2010
I bought this for a tall deep hedge that needs cutting just two or three times a year. It worked well for those two or three times but now it simply won't cut. It's out of warranty and so I opened it up to see if I could see what was the problem. I noted that the adjustable, non-moving blade was for some reason linked around the mechanism that moved the other blade. Due to what appears to be a design fault (I'm not an engineer), the rotating mechanism that works the moving blade can force the non-moving blade to move, thus creating a situation where the blades are in a position where they won't cut. Hence, adjusting the position of the non-moving blade provides only temporary relief, as it is soon forced to move again.

The provided instructions say nothing of this, or even how to adjust the blade. Theoretically, it has to go for a service to get it fixed but can it be fixed? Getting it serviced and fixed is likely to cost more than buying a new alternative product. I'm very disappointed. I have had no more than about ten hours use out of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best on the market 13 Jun 2008
I spent some time looking around for a long reach , battery hedge cutter. I even purchased another but the battery was too smal for such a job. The Sabre is excellent nice design , reach is great for about an 8 foot hedge with the ability to cut the top with the easily flexible head and unlike most a decent size cutting blade. This is possible because of the seperate and large battery that you can wear seperately. I used it on a large hedge and it coped easily, if a little heavy after a while .
Subsequently have had to return the charger and be careful with the blade section undoing slightly and disconnecting , dealer tells me they see a few that are 'broken' but just push it back in and lock it and away you go ! Still a great buy .
2012 update: Still going strong but had to replace the batteries, you do not need Flymo ones, just open it up, pleanty of people sell these standard batteries much cheaper.

4.0 out of 5 stars A cut above 24 Aug 2008
Fed up having to use your extention lead or cutting through the cable every time you attempt to give the hedge a trim?...........well this Sabre cut hedge trimmer complete with 24 volt battery pack and charger could be just what you need.
My hedge in the back garden is about 15ft high by 30ft wide so the fact this trimmer is extendable for a greater reach of up to 3.2 meters and has a tilting head is a real bonus.
The battery pack goes over your shoulders and has a belt that ties around your waste but beware it is a little heavy.
You can cut up to 330m2 on a single charge but it can get a little frustrating if you haven't charged the battery pack enough and you run out of power before finishing the job in hand so do bare this in mind and plan things the day before.
All in all an easy to use hedge trimmer that reaches the parts other trimmers cannot reach.

Amazon Verified Purchase
First time i used this, i thought it was great, did exactly what i bought it for, made short work of my untidy bushes.
Second time though, i had only had it switched on for about two minutes, when it made a popping sound and stopped abrubtly, and then smoke and a strong smell of burning came from the hedge trimmer unit.
So I probably got about 20 minutes use altogether before it blew up!!!!!!
So all i can say is make your own mind up, but i know what i would do!!!
Rang flymo as it was only a few months old and was still under guarantee, but didn't seem that interested, just said contact amazon and ask for a refund,so that is what i have done.
Doesn't help the half cut bush in the garden though.!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hassle free with amazon though, brilliant customer service,as always.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good Piece of Equipment 28 Jun 2009
By Richard Allen TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
I have a large, tall hedge which I maintain with a petrol powered hedge clipper. However, I've always found it very difficult to get to the higher parts of the hedge, and using a ladder is hard work and precarious. I pondered for a long time on buying a petrol powered long reach trimmer, but they cost about £300, and it's only a small amount of hedge that I can't reach. So, after a lot of deliberatiion, and encouraged by the reviews here, I bought the flymo.

As you'd expect, it's no where near as powerful as a petrol trimmer. However, it has coped pretty well overall. It stuggles with the laurel parts of the hedge, which is very thick and green, but for other less dense parts it does very well. Even though the battery is on a belt (which is a clever idea), it's still pretty weighty when you're leaning over, but you can rest it against your hip to take some of the weight. It's well enough made and the articulating head is easy to adjust to find the right angle.

So overall I'm pleased enough to give it 5 stars, as it does the job I had in mind. If you had a fairly small hedge, this trimmer might be enough on its own to cope with the whole job. For me, it's a very good complement to a petrol timmer to get to those few, hard to reach spots.

1.0 out of 5 stars not up to the job 27 Feb 2011
I've bought two of these over the last four years and took both back with in a short space of time.

I think it has a design flaw. After doing a lot of trimming the thing becomes weak, like the mechanism inside has worn teeth or something.

Battery on your waist is too heavy and cumbersome too.

There are more reliable options out there, probably cost a bit more but they'll last a lot longer.
