    Disappointed 20 April 2009
I bought a Flymo Pac-a-Shredder last August from my local B&Q superstore, and used it in the autumn a few times without any problem. I probably filled the collecting box no more than ten times with tree branches and twigs. I adjusted the mechanism once or twice towards the end of that time as I noticed that the shredder was starting to perforate the branches rather than chop them; ie branches come out still as solid branches, but with cut marks in them and stripped of their bark. I have tried to use it twice this year, most recently to shred the 1" thick branches of an apple tree; on both occasions it has perforated the material and I found that I could not adjust it any more. I reported this to Flymo last week and was told to take it to their local service centre (a private independant firm) under the guarantee. I collected it last Friday and was assured that it was working satisfactorily. The repairman said that there was plenty more adjustment in the adjusting plate, and I noticed that although the adjustment screw was at its fullest extent, the teeth of the cog were bearing on the adjustment plate. I got it home and put the apple tree branches in it again - it was no different to before I took it for service. I rang Flymo again this morning who told me to take it back to the repairer, despite my insisting that he had said that he could do no more. At this point, I called B&Q who, despite my buying it over seven months ago, agreed to give me a full refund, which I have now collected.

This machine is very heavy; I would have hated the thought of returning it by post or courier, so I am so glad I bought it from B&Q.

I am disappointed. I checked the internet reviews endlessly before making my purchase; I bought it because it had very good reviews, and my initial feelings about it were very positive. It feels very robust and packs away easily; I was able to use it as a table in my garage when it was not in use. But a shredder that cannot shred is useless, however robust and easy to store it is. If Flymo had admitted it was faulty I would happily have accepted a repair or a replacement, but mine simply didn't work even when there was allegedly nothing wrong with it.

If you still want to buy one after reading this, I recommend you buy it from somewhere you can return it to easily if it is faulty, and test it well by giving it as much use as possible straight after purchase; I doubt that all suppliers are as generous as B&Q with their returns policy.

Very poor performer 10 Oct 2009
    By Moogie
I bought this item two years ago but because of my work I hardly used it at all until this summer. Like other reviewers I found the following problems:
    1. It only perforated branches of almost any size. They come out of the shredder box looking like a full human vertebrae! I've adjusted the blade and plate to their closest proximity but it still only perforates.
    2. Shredding softer materials is hard work because the entry slot to the shredder blade is so small. I have just spent this afternoon disposing of the season's tomato plants and they were so bushy that they just couldn't get to the blade. I ended up having to pull off every single branch and feed them all in separately, and even then on some of the larger ones I had to tear these apart too.
    3. Sometimes the entrance slot gets so jammed up with loose material that it won't draw down into the blade that it stops you from putting new material in. I've had to keep a stick nearby to wiggle around in the slot to try and scoop out the blockage. I had to do this eleven times this afternoon during 40 minutes of usage.

Fianlly, I asked a gardener friend of mine who is a long-term allotment keeper to come and have a look at it just to see if I was doing somethng wrong. He too thought the machine was poor and he later brought round his Bosch in the boot of his car. That worked like a dream!!
So, I would suggest that this Flymo is a no go!

Flymo 2500w Pac A Shred Quiet Shredder
I was impressed with the speed and delivery of this Shredder from Thompson Online which arrived quite quickly. It had been unpacked and repacked by Thompsons and split into two packages. The collection box had been removed and sent separately as apparently the Flymo packaging was not robust enough when passing through the carriers systems. It had also been partially assembled and tested by them which explained some of the marks and small scratches on the machine. I was impressed with the design especially how the machine could be folded down into the collection box but I was disappointed with the performance of the shredder, it only partially shredded the material put in and hardly touched the softer leaves and soft branches. It did however chip the larger and stronger branches upto 40mm very well which leads me to believe that it is a good chipper but not a good shredder. The gap between the cutter blade and backplate was not square being two or three millimetres wider at one end. The gap between the cutter blades and the side of the machine on the other side was quite large allowing lots of 'stuff' to bypass the cutter. The resultant mulch was nowhere near as fine as our previous ALKO machine which finally wore out after nearly twenty years. We compost everything possible and were not prepared to accept the poor ability of the machine to do the complete job and have arranged for it to be returned for which we are waiting to hear from Thompson.
