Book Description

2 Sep 2013
The name Flying Scotsman is renowned across the world, but the detailed story of the globally famous locomotive is often less well known. In this illustrated history, James S. Baldwin takes the reader on a railway journey through time, documenting the years of public and private ownership, from the Great Northern Railway in the early days, right through LNER and British Railways possession, to the tenure of Alan Pegler, Sir William McAlpine, Pete Waterman and beyond. With the engine having been acquired by the National Railway Museum in 2004, the future looks secure. Complete with stunning black-and-white and colour illustrations, this is the perfect package to allow Flying Scotsman enthusiasts, young and old, to get a real taste of the rich history of the ‘most famous steam locomotive in the world’.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting historical record of an old lady. 18 Nov 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Very informative historical record of the loco presented in good quality paperback book.

Has some good photos taken throughout her history, and one of the only books I've seen that gives dates when the pictures were taken. This is crucial if readers (like myself) are in to model building and need to know when modifications were implemented. Likewise, contains dates when the loco went into shops for major and light repairs. With it being a recent publication, it contains detail shots during her NRM rebuild, in wartime black and latest liveries!

Selfishly, I would like to have seen more pictures taken during the 1940's (but realise railway photography was banned during the war period), and into nationalisation era. Overall, well researched, a good read, and extremely good value!

5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas present 2013 8 Jan 2014
By Fiona
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Bought this for my Granddad for xmas 2013. He loves his books, and our family is related to the steam railway world (my Uncle once drove the Flying Scotsman) and whenever we think of what to get him, we also put 'books' and 'the railway' together. The trouble with this is that we buy him books, but when Christmas/Birthday come around again, we cannot recall what we bought him the previous year. It's always asking the question "does he already have that one?"
Luckily, this was a brand-new book, straight from publication so I knew he didn't have it and that he would love it.
I was right. Minutes after opening it, he was reading it and engrossed so much, we had to call him three times to respond to us.
Anyway (straying from the point here) it is a great book, I highly recommend for any 'Scotsman' or railway enthusiast - a good read guaranteed :D
