Product Description

Training guide for flying single-engine aircraft at high altitudes in mountainous regions.

From the Back Cover

Packed with dozens of lifesaving illustrations!

HIGH ALTITUDE, LOW RISK!

Piloting aircraft above mountainous regions demands more than a thirst for adventure. It also requires a keen understanding of the unique challenges involved in mountain flying — for the safety and pleasure of everyone involved.

That’s why if you’re a pilot, a flight instructor, or are learning to fly, Flying the Mountains is the one-stop, practical resource you need to stay safe while soaring at extreme altitudes. Written with insight by a noted high-elevation flight instructor and pilot, Flying the Mountains:

* Outlines the nature of mountain flying
* Relays mountain flight accident statistics and causes
* Details effects of altitude on aircraft and pilots
* Examines in-flight ailments related to mountain flying
* Reviews take-off conditions from mountain airports
* And much, much more!

Logically organized by phases of flight — from preflight preparation to landings — Flying the Mountains delivers a potent combination of statistics, techniques, and examples of actions (correct and incorrect) used in actual flight scenarios.

A saddened ending to a wonderful book 2 Feb 2007
By James M. Diehl - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
As reported by the Telluride, Colorado Watch: Fletcher Fairchild Anderson died on Nov. 18, 2005 in an airplane accident in the Snake River Canyon of Wyoming. He was 57. I was so enthused by his humorous, caring, and clear writing style and by the valuable aviation wisdom that he carefully imparted that I sought to reach him by email in November, 2006 and discovered, instead, his obituary. I feel like I have lost a friend even though I never had the opportunity to meet Fletcher. His book will remain a treasured resource to me because of the insight of the central Colorado rockies that it provides. I store is with a copy of the Denver Sectional Aeronautical Chart with the goal of memorizing mountain pass, river and valley, and highway locations. I feel like I know the region after having read this book. I look forward to flying in this beautiful but unforgiving environment, after adequate personal instruction, and will continue to use Fletcher's book as my launch point to learn more and promote safe aviation practices to which he was devoted.

Good Addition to my bookshelf 2 Dec 2010
By N. M. Cameron - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is especially about flying Colorado. It covers much more about high altitude work than others. It is very specific. The author appears to me to be an individualist. It is not a book on Alaska flying, but would be a very good addition to Sparky Imeson's wonderful book. Too bad he was killed but he would have been trying right to the last. Flying is about enjoying life, he did.

Great Learning Tool, Very Informative 12 July 2007
By Steven H. Ragan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am new to GA and a flatlander. The book is written specifically for the mountains but a lot of the information dealing with weather is very useful as a learning tool out of the mountains. Too bad the author was killed while flying in a canyon. I researched his death on the NTSB website and sure enough he was killed flying too low in a canyon and struck a wire. Overall a great book packed with great information.
