This is a splendid compilation of wartime recordings by the orchestra that went on to become The Squadronaires, and for many of the tracks this is their first reissue (indeed "Hobo's Prayer" and "Liza" were rejected originally!) If you like disciplined big band playing, with superb solos from the likes of Tommy McQuater, George Chisholm, Andy McDevitt and Jock Cummings, then you'll be delighted with this.

Ordered this recording when 'Wolf on the Prowl' was delayed. High standard of musicianship from what was the leading UK band of its day - tight ensemble
playing and excellent solos - I am old enough to remember them!!

If you are into vintage big band swing this CD is a must for your collection. I enjoyed nearly all the 25 tracks which I believe come from the wartime period before the band became known as the Squadronaires. There is not much sleeve information but the recording quality is good without the 78rpm flavour being fully engineered out. Whilst the vocals on numbers like 'Boogie-Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B' dont work well in an english accent it is clear that this band was a highly competent ensemble which in my view compares favourably with the best american bands of the time. The content is a mix of wartime hits, balads and dance standards and listen out for a superb dixieland-swing arrangement of 'I'm comming Virginia' which I think Artie Shaw would have been proud of. For what it costs its well worth a try.
