I was sceptical about these books (I have read one too many books about fairies and schools in the process of finding suitable books for my daughter) - but these are marvellous. They are Malory Towers, but with fairies. Twink is a dead ringer for Darrell Rivers; Sooze is Alicia Johns; Bimi is Sally Hope; Mariella is a kind of composite of all the bullying baddies in EB's school stories - and so on. That makes them sound like a rip-off, but they're not at all - Lee Wetherley uses the tradition to make something new. I shall be buying the lot - they are real, serious page-turners, and are responsible for me being too tired now (I can't stop reading after midnight, just to find out what happens!!)
I couldn't recommend these more highly.

If you liked Malory Towers, you'll love this. The fairies, their environment and their relationships are a delight to join. I've read it three times so far and have ordered it for my sister and goddaughter and am about to order the other three. Great gift and great read for children and their parents!

My daughter is a confident reader going into year 3. She's not quite ready for Malory towers, but glitterwings academy books have the same sort of storylines (friendship issues, tricky classes, midnight feasts...) and are just that bit easier to read: larger text, with line drawings every few pages. The chapters are relatively long (as I found when reading them to her at bedtime!) but the books are just the right length narrative to keep her interested. She is about to start the last of a ten-book set, and has thoroughly enjoyed them all. I would say age 7-9 is about right depending on reading ability; fairies seem to lose their appeal beyond that. Highly recommended.
