Book Description

This is a collection of flying instructor Helen Krasner's flight test articles, which were originally published in 'Today's Pilot' and some other aviation magazines. The first in a proposed series of four books, this one looks at the smaller helicopters on which most people learn to fly, such as the Robinson R22, R44, Schweizer 300CBi, and Bell 206 JetRanger. Each helicopter is described in detail, with an account of Helen's personal experiences of what it is like to fly it for the first time. It is thus much more than a theoretical textbook account. There is also a section on the history of each type, and detailed specifications. Where possible, a photo of each helicopter is included.

This book is aimed at anyone interested in helicopter flying, whether they already fly helicopters, hope to in the future, fly models, or simply find rotary aircraft fascinating. It would also make an excellent gift for any rotary enthusiast. It contains a great deal of detail, and is over 27,000 words in length.

Future books will cover flying 'Popular Helicopters', 'Historic Helicopters' and 'More Unusual Helicopters'.

More About the Author

Until recently Helen Krasner held a rotary Commercial Pilot's Licence and an Instructor's Rating for helicopters. She worked as a helicopter instructor for many years, instructing for various flying schools on Robinson R22s and R44s. She has also flown 30+ other helicopter types, had a private pilot's licence for aeroplanes, and had a go at flying microlights, gliders, and balloons.

Helen has been writing professionally for many years and now contributes regularly to a number of aviation publications and websites. Before becoming involved in aviation she walked 5,000 miles around the coast of Britain, gaining a 'Guinness Book of Records' entry. She wrote about this adventure in her first book 'Midges, Maps & Muesli', now available in both print and ebook formats. After she became a pilot she followed this up with two aviation books - 'The Helicopter Pilot's Companion', and 'Flying Helicopters - a Companion to the PPL(H)'. Helen was nominated for an Aerospace Journalist of the Year award in 2004, for an article about flying helicopters in Russia. She is also a former Newsletter Editor for the BWPA (British Women Pilots' Association).

Helen lives in a small village in Derbyshire in England, with a wonderful view of the Peak District. She has travelled extensively, and written a book about her travels - 'Travels on Seven Continents'. She shares her life with her partner David and their four cats, and she and David have collaborated on a book about David's travels on a narrowboat with his cat before they met, 'Travels With Cookie'. The cats have led to a further book about looking after the feline species, but they are no help whatsoever when it comes to writing; they think their job is to sit on the computer keyboard!
