Product Description

In an age of colourless bureaucrats, Nigel Farage is a politician who is impossible to ignore, provoking controversy and admiration in equal measure. A fun-loving iconoclast whose motto is work hard and play harderA", Farage's charismatic leadership and determination to battle the forces of anti-libertarianism have made him a Robin Hood figure to many, and propelled his party, UKIP, into a position of real power in the country. Never one for a quiet life, this paperback edition includes the story of Nigel's extraordinary escape from death in a plane crash on the eve of the 2010 general election (the light aircraft he was flying in got caught up in a UKIP banner it was towing and crashed shortly after take-off, badly injuring Farage and his pilot), his recovery and return to the leadership of UKIP in November 2010. Featuring sometimes hilarious and often terrifying encounters with a stellar supporting cast, including Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, Nicolas Sarkozy, Jose Manuel Barroso, and UKIP's short-lived, silver-gilt masco, Robert Kilroy-Silk - and told with Farage's customary wit and humour, Fighting Bull is a candid, colourful life story by a fascinating and controversial character. It also shows that one fearless, determined individual can still make a difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Colourful, candid and informative 15 July 2014
By LXIX TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
'Flying Free' is a colourful and engaging read about the rise of both Nigel Farage and UKIP. The man, who is synonymous with this party, is often considered to be an alternative to the 'professional politician' and this book is an affirmation of this. For example, some of the language is strictly 'after the watershed' and you simply couldn't imagine any other prominent politician writing like this.

Nigel Farage did not study PPE at Oxbridge or serve an apprenticeship as a political advisor or spin doctor. Instead, we have a man with a genuine enthusiasm for his causes. You do not have to agree with his politics to acknowledge that he has helped build UKIP from an atom to a prominent place on the periodic table of the UK political landscape (even winning the 2014 Euro elections on seats and share of the national popular vote).

This book is quirky in places and remarkably candid. It's written in the first person. Some notable parts include him surviving a serious accident with a car, his battle with testicular cancer, getting sacked once whilst working in the City, his role in keeping UKIP together despite the myriad clash of personalities and incidents involving key figures, the conservatives making overtures to him, his underdog tenacity despite losing many by-elections, the media ridicule, his early impressions of the European Parliament and his regular run-ins with the authorities there who oversee that grand monument to conformity.

All-in-all this is a very enjoyable read and a political autobiography with a difference. Nigel Farage rallies against modern machine politics that is dominated by technocrats, careerists and Yes-men.

Events and the political calendar are likely to keep UKIP as one of the most prominent 'other' political parties in the UK over the next few years, making this newly revised and expanded autobiography of its most high-profile and flamboyant personality, Nigel Farage, timely not only for the party's own fans but for anyone else interested in British politics.

It is a well-written, lively book, full of the sort of pugnacious language that has helped give Farage his popularity. It is also rather kinder to some of his opponents that you might expect if you had only come across Farage through his headline grabbing strings of insults aimed at others, though when it comes to the EU and its main functionaries he doesn't hold back. He even has some kind words to say for the man who threatened to kill him - and rightly so given the person's mental health had fallen apart.

Nigel Farage writes much about his own personal failings - the drunkenness, failed marriage and more - in a way that mixes skilfully killing future criticism by being frank with a strong view that if you believe in freedom the important thing is that people take responsibility for their own actions rather than that you try to ban people from making mistakes.

Despite being such a good read, at the end of it I was not that much clearer about what really motivates Nigel Farage than at the start. A libertarian streak certainly does come out. That explains some of his politics, much of which however seems to be heavily motivated by a love of being the gadfly, the person with the alternative views poking fun at the establishment and having fun in being different.

5.0 out of 5 stars A different view for a different Europe 23 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback
A really nice autobiography of UKIP's leader Nigel Farage. As usual Farage is funny, smart and logical. Maybe in the future he'll be a first star in the UK politics...maybe not... In my opinion he's the only one tuned with people's view.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential (and entertaining) read 15 July 2012

Great book that addresses the dangers the European Union poses to our (UK) way of life. Easy to read and very amusing in parts. Start with the epilogue (the last chapter). Truly essential reading if you love the UK.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling read 16 Feb 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Nigel Farage is undoubtedly a like or loathe type of character. The brief time he gets on television - usually on some BBC politics show where the broadcaster delights in promoting its pro-federalist agenda - fails to afford him much more than sound bites.

I attended a speech he gave in Newcastle recently where he spoke eloquently and humorously for an hour and a half with no notes. That speech, and this book, provides a much greater insight not only to the man but also his cause; anyone who believes in democracy and the right of the people to decide for themselves will be horrified by the accounts of fraud, bullying and deceit perpetuated by the unelected, unaccountable EU.

Funny and shocking, a compelling read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Terrific Read! 10 Jun 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Absolutely brilliant! This book should be compulsory reading for all who wants to learn the true story of the UKIP and the EU without the media twisting and turning the facts to its advantage and on the expense of the people themselves. Well done, Mr. Farage!

I thought the ending was very weak. I think it would have been much stronger if the main protagonist of this sordid tale perished in the plane crash.
