Book Description

14 Nov 2002 Osprey Combat Aircraft
The Boeing B-17, which has come to epitomize the American war effort in Europe, took the fight to Germans from the late summer of 1942 through to VE-Day. Its primary operator in Western Europe was the "Mighty Eighth", who controlled 27 bomb groups for much of the war. This second of two volumes covers the 14 bomb groups of the Third Air Division. First hand accounts, period photography, profile artworks and nose art scrap views bring to life aircraft from each of the groups within the Third Air Division.

First Sentence
The first steps in the creation of the 3rd Bomb Division (BD) began in May 1943, when it was decided that the 94th, 95th and 96th BGs of the 1st Bomb Wing (BW) in Northamptonshire would transfer south to form the nucleus of the new 4th BW in Suffolk and Essex. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars B17 units of the 8th air force,part 2 1 Mar 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a great follow up volume to part 1,packed with personal memories of combat which evoked feelings of both sympathy and horror as to just what these B17 crews lived through on an almost daily basis. It was either complete your tour or die,no half measures. The book also contains some great profile drawings of some of the B17s involved and will form an essential part of my collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flying Knights 27 April 2001
By "saileach" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This excellent book by Osprey Aviation details the beginnings of the B-17 units of the U. S. Eighth Air Force in England during World War 2 until the war's end. Liberally illustrated with photos, line drawings, and paintings, it also provides a partial Bomb Group Assignment chart, numerous personal anecdotes, and follows the careers of many celebrated fortresses.
A nice section on nose art examples rounds out a worthy tribute to this fine aircraft and the men that flew in it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Buy! 6 Feb 2008
By Christopher R. Hughes - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I found this book and its counterpart to be great reads. Full of rich stories and great photographs, there is not much else you can expect. I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in aviation history and to anyone interested in World War II aviation history specifically. The book marks the heroism and courage of th bomber crews over the Third Reich. Well worth the money spent.

Not entirely what I expected. But okay would have liked more in depth discussion of the actual planes and the crews.
