Product Description

Includes tactics for fishing high country lakes, the conflicting currents of high mountain streams, and the ever-changing waters of beaver ponds; information on cutthroats, brook trout, goldens, rainbows, grayling; and information on the best weather and seasons to fish and the tackle and flies to take into the high country. Fly-fishing in scenic and remote mountain waters is a special kind of fishing, explored in depth by veteran fly fisher John Gierach. It explains how to find the best waters and how to fish them to the best advantage. The author says "The mountains -- any mountains -- can make you pay for your fishing with time, shoe leather, exertion, and even disappointment. But they usually give back more than they take in terms of solitude and a sense of adventure that you just won't find on more civilised waters.".

I SHUDDER TO THINK OF ALL THE big trout I've spooked out of the shallows of alpine lakes by just charging up to the bank or into the water, eager to fish and elated at having the heavy pack off my back and the long walk over. Read the first page

3.0 out of 5 stars Flyfishing the high country 25 Sep 2001
By Kirk Apel - Published on Amazon.com
As far as a comparison with Geirach's other books, this book and Flyfishing Small Stream are unlike the other books written by John Geirach. The others, such as Trout Bum, Dances With Trout and the rest, are collections of interesting, insightful and sometimes humurous essays on various flyfishing topics. These would be enjoyed by flyfishermen and women as well as those who do not fish at all.
However,Flyfishing Small Stream and Flyfishing the High Country are relatively more technical, "how to" types of books geared more towards those with a pre-existing knowledge of flyfishing. Also, if you do not live near the Rockies or plan on going there soon, High Country would have limited relevance to you. Having said that, I love John Geirach's work, I have read all of his essay compilation books and I just enjoyed those more than what I call the "how to" books.

I own all of John Gierach's books! Some are written to be educational in a story telling sense, and others are just plain fun to read if your a trout fisherman.

Great books to read when you can't be there.

It is just what you would expect from Gierach. Consise ant to the point in his usual humerous style.
One of his few how to books.
5.0 out of 5 stars Essential, easy to read book to get you primed for the high country 27 Feb 2013
By Bobandy - Published on Amazon.com
I purchased this book many years ago, when I was just starting as a fly angler and it helped me immeasurably during my initial sojurns to the mountains of Wyoming. John Gierach's writing style is relaxed, informative, and entertaining as can be. He outlines the equipment (which essentially hasn't changed in the 20 something years that have passed since this book was published), the types of waters, the trout, their food, the weather, and anything else you can think of. As other reviewers have commented, this is an instructional book, which is GREAT, but it's also entertaining and filled with tpyical Gierachian anecdotes and stories. You'll be dreaming of mountain meadows and pine scented breeze as you read this little book and when the warm weather comes, reach for those hare's ear soft hackels, some midges, and your rod, and make tracks to the high country! This book is perfect for beginners, people wanting to learn more about the high country, or fans of John Gierach.
5.0 out of 5 stars If you know John's writing....you want this one too! 23 Feb 2013

Another great read from the flyfisher who says it like it really feels out there!
If you've enjoyed any of his other books, you'll like this one too!
