Inspired as a Pony Club hunter trials spectator, Ruth finally plucks up the courage to ask her father to allow her to use her savings to buy a pony now they've moved to the countryside from London. Pony-less young readers; current Pony Clubbers (and mature ex-members!)will follow her exploits as she finds Fly-by-Night, the affordable but unsuitable young pony; her struggles to afford his keep and equipment and her efforts to train him (with the assistance of a spoilt local girl and an unexpected ally), with those Pony Club hunter trials as their ultimate competition goal.
Fly-by-Night also deals with family issues, from the insights gained from the foster children lodging with the Hollis family; Ted's motorbike accident and financial difficulties posed by the new house mortgage. So not your typical jolly-pony-story-by-numbers formula books but maybe thats why I enjoyed re-reading it so much when I discovered it recently during spring cleaning almost as much as I I did as yet another pony-mad but ponyless 10 year old!
