Product Description

"Fly-by-Night" was not the best choice for an eleven-year-old girl who had never ridden before; but as soon as Ruth Hollis saw the sturdy, lively pony, she knew that he was the one she wanted. All her life Ruth had longed to own a pony and now that her family had moved from London to a new housing estate in East Anglia, she had persuaded her father to let her spend her savings on a pony. But having taken possession of Fly-by-Night, Ruth found that her troubles had only just begun.

Classic 14 Jan 2003
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
A classic heart-warming story about pony-mad Ruth's quest to buy and train her dream pony. Hampered by her non-horsy background - instead of the knowledgable Pony Club parents and rustic stableyard she daydreams about, Ruth lives on a new housing estate in Norfolk with her motorbike-mad brother, Ted; her long-suffering father, a sales rep for Tibbets toiletware and her mother, 'dressed in a frilly apron and towny shoes'.

Inspired as a Pony Club hunter trials spectator, Ruth finally plucks up the courage to ask her father to allow her to use her savings to buy a pony now they've moved to the countryside from London. Pony-less young readers; current Pony Clubbers (and mature ex-members!)will follow her exploits as she finds Fly-by-Night, the affordable but unsuitable young pony; her struggles to afford his keep and equipment and her efforts to train him (with the assistance of a spoilt local girl and an unexpected ally), with those Pony Club hunter trials as their ultimate competition goal.

Fly-by-Night also deals with family issues, from the insights gained from the foster children lodging with the Hollis family; Ted's motorbike accident and financial difficulties posed by the new house mortgage. So not your typical jolly-pony-story-by-numbers formula books but maybe thats why I enjoyed re-reading it so much when I discovered it recently during spring cleaning almost as much as I I did as yet another pony-mad but ponyless 10 year old! Red rosette for this champion book.

By Mrs. F. S. Haynes VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is a lovely introduction to Ruth whose destiny is to fall in love with Pennington, K M Peyton's hero from the Pennington trilogy. Aside from it being a horse story, Ruth desperately looking after a horse in a modern housing estate, adds to her families finacial woes, it puts in place the foundations of her characterfpr when we met her in the Pennington books. The next in the series is The Team which introduces Jonnathon and Peter from Prove yourself a hero, and a Midsummer nights Death. All excellent teenage reading though I have to say I still read again and again long since being a teenager, this is K M Peyton reminding us of all the heartache and unfairness of teenage life love and horses. Please read.

AMAZING!!! 20 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
I'm 13 and this was a great book for me, including the team - the following book in the series - and Blind Beauty by K.M Peyton. If, K.M Peyton is new to you I would recommend her to you because, she's great for children aged 10-14 even adults wouldn't mind her. She's great about horses and writes good plots.
This is a heart braking but tempting and loving book all in one about Ruth Hollis who really wants a pony but, her family don't have enough money. She meets a boy called Peter who helps her out and gives good friendship. Finally she finds a pony for a cheap amount. However, this pony doesn't behave and is really difficult and as Ruth's first horse this is her toughest challenge yet!
If you like a great book about horses, love, passion and adventure this is definitely the book for you and you seriously can't miss it!
