"Fly Fishing by J.R. Hartley" is a collection of fishing-themed anecdotes and stories by Michael Russell, cheekily using the pseudonym of the much-loved character J.R. Hartley from the "Yellow Pages" advert of the 1980's.

Whilst the title sounds like a textbook or guide to fly fishing at first, it is actually a very nice collection of memories from Russell's / Hartley's youth in 1930's Yorkshire, and how what began as a schoolboy's hobby gradually evolved into a memorable pasttime.

The stories within this book are well-written and give so much detail without writing paragraph after paragraph of description. I actually found the stories very warm-hearted, and gave me a glimpse of life that I had never seen nor stopped to think about. Having grown up practising sea-fishing with my Dad in Ilfracombe, my idea of inland fishing was of men in tweed suits carrying wicker baskets and bamboo rods. Not so, it seems, for Russell's / Hartley's depiction of fly-fishing in 1930's Yorkshire gives a unique insight into the fishing practices and challenges of the era, as well as an idyllic picture of rural life in the years before and during World War II.

This is a wonderful gem of a book, and whilst some collect it purely for the "Yellow Pages" link, I encourage everyone to read it, because this is a book few other angling memoirs will be able to match.

Delightful anecdotes. 20 Oct 2005
Format:Hardcover
A little gem of a book. Full of anecdotes and tales from an obviously full angling life. From the humour of "The holiday let." to the eerie "Storm warning." this book never fails to delight.
No technique or tips, just stories to enjoy. The chapter "Man of God." rang particularly loud bells for me as I know the pool concerned very well and have often fished it. Perfect to read in front of the fire with a drop of the good stuff in your hand.

I Am Carrying J.R. Hartley's Child 20 April 2001
By Helen Jupiter - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I happily awarded this book 5 stars for one reason and one reason only.

A few years ago one of the most popular television commercials broadcast in the UK showed an old gentleman scouring his local bookshops in search of an out-of-print book: Fly Fishing by JR Hartley. After a few fruitless days involving countless visits to rundown second hand bookshops, his daughter says "No luck Dad? Never mind. What about trying Yellow Pages?"

After a few hours spent flicking through the weighty doorstop, sure enough he finds a shop he hasn't tried. He rings up its number and then he smiles as his request is successful. When asked for his name he replies JR Hartley. The voiceover booms soothingly "Good old Yellow Pages".

The ad was so successful that it spawned a spin-off book of the same Fly Fishing title by a fictional character called JR Hartley.

Well. There you have it, folks. The man, the memories--even the book don't really exist. 5 stars for sure.
