Book Description

Fennel’s Journal is the heartfelt and entertaining account of one man’s search for an old-fashioned and peaceful rural life. Written by eccentric English countryman Fennel Hudson, the Journal traces his attempts to balance the pressures of modern living by following the mantra of ‘Stop – Unplug – Escape – Enjoy’.

Brought to life by a mixture of thought-provoking and often humorous incidents, Fennel’s writing is deeply personal, self-effacing, and honest. As one reader commented, “Fennel is the only author who can make me laugh out loud and cry in the same sentence. His Journal had me constantly in tears, for all the right reasons”.

'Fly Fishing' celebrates the most graceful and artful side of angling, explaining what it means to be an angler – in the spirit of Izaak Walton – and how fly fishers differ from bait fishers. The sporting and aesthetic beauty of fly fishing is described in Fennel’s usual witty and contemplative style. As he says, “Fly fishing is the ultimate form of angling; it gives us a reason to fish simply, travel lightly, and explore the wild places that replenish our soul. With a fly rod, we’re not casting to a fish; rather a circle of dreams, that ripples and spreads into every aspect of our lives”.

Praise for the writing of Fennel Hudson:

"Author, naturalist and countryman. His is a lifestyle to inspire the most bricked-up townie."

"It's Jack Hargreaves. It's Countryfile. It's quality Sunday newspaper stuff. It's 1948, all over again."

"Fennel's writing flows un-hurried; from the first sentence I was thinking, 'this lad can write!' It's informative and very refreshing."

"Such inspiring writing. His words 'Somewhere in the undergrowth of the impossible' had me staring out from the page in amazement. Fennel's writing is pure poetry."

"Deep in places, outright bonkers in others. A demonstration of the fine line between genius and madness."

"Brilliant writing. He made me laugh out loud in bed. My wife was asking questions!"

"Witty and emotive, his writing conveys passion for a slower and quieter pace of life."

"His writing inspires me with faith in the quiet life and that although I may be isolated, I am certainly not alone."

"Fennel has captured the essence of the countryside - that is, its almost human character. So brilliantly has he compared and contrasted it with the nature of we humans. His writing is not so much a 'balanced study', more a 'study of the balance' that exists between Nature and Man."

Fennel's Fly Fishing Journal hooked me, drew me in and landed me from start to finish. Fennel writes with style and passion; he is obviously in tune with the peace and tranquility of the countryside. But he knows the excitement and cententment of seeking out his quarry by casting a fly in far less privileged waters then those championed by Halford, Skues, etc. This will become a modern classic on flyfishing for us all.
However, I am concerned that he may have sold the family silver by giving away the description and dressing of the fly from his heritage that has consistently produced trout. Thank goodness fish can't read, but you can!
