Product Description

Product Description

Flute Basics Pupil's Book is a landmark method by Sally Adams, one of the leading figures in flute education. It starts at absolute beginner level and progresses to about Grade 2. There are 22 stages, each section includes a wonderful variety of concert pieces from the great composers, traditional tunes and fun, original exercises, 'finger gyms' and 'warm ups' to help establish a sound technique, 'factfiles' and 'quizzes' to teach notation and general musicianship, helpful, clear 'fingering charts' and 'rhythm boxes' and great illustrations. Also available is a book/CD edition as well as a separate accompaniment CD. There is a separate Flute Basics Teacher's Book, which offers tips on how to approach new techniques and motivate young players. This book would be particularly helpful for teachers who are not flute specialists. I am an adult beginner on the flute and found this book to be straightforward and simple to learn from. It is clear and has tips and hints scattered throughout on looking after the instrument and playing technique.
Of course the first few sections are very simple and contain Jingle Bells and When the Saints Go Marching but we would expect that from a starter book...
The progression through the book is enough to keep you interested and keeps you working steadily, the tunes are varied from Mozart to Jazz with Blackadder thrown in as well. Lots of exercises to do and some longer pieces to take on at the end of the book.
Some music tutors can be frustrating as the music seems childish but this book has avoided this and full credit to the writer for that. Grown up players always want to advance quickly and jump the early stuff...But this is interesting enough to stop you going ahead to soon. Kids also like to play more grown up stuff asap so this is for all new players and I highly recommend it. I am on section 5 by the way :)

Flute Basics 18 Aug 2011

The "Basics" series all seem to be good, though edited by different people. My daughter had the clarinet Basics and then decided to try flute and got the flute Basics. They were both good. They have a clear progression, with new notes as you progress, as you would expect, but also the tunes are interesting and musical, not just umpty-numpty notes. The books also look modern, bright and attractive to use. Excellent first book.
