Following the acclaimed cendre (always lower case), this is the new collaboration between Christian Fennesz and Ryuichi Sakamoto. As neither need any sort of introduction, I will cut to the chase. Eschewing any song titles, each track simply states a number, starting at 0318 and finishing at 0429. It is a studied piece of work that wears it's art house credentials proudly on it's sleeve. But it is the music that we are here to talk about. There is no radical departure from cendre and there are echoes of Fennesz's wonderful remix for Sakamoto's Bricolages album. Fennesz sits slighlty back in the mix and creates delicate textures which underpin Sakamoto's expressive piano motifs. There are the obvious Eno / Harold Budd comparisons, which, although valid, are perhaps too obvious. A far closer call would be the remix that Akira Rabelaise did for Harold Budd's "As Long As I Hold My Breath", from the Avalon Sutra album. However, flumina more that stands up for itself. It is so subtle and full of emotion. Fennesz matching Sakamoto's bold playing with his own arsenal of clicks, glitches, washes and static bursts. It is difficult not to lapse into the ambient cliches when describing this music as previous reviewers of Fennesz have found. However, it is emotion that drives this album, as it does both of their solo works and it is the quality and emotion that makes this album so powerful.

Piano, electronics and grey sea (on the cover) bringing to mind freezing waves, cold wind and polar landscapes. "Flumina" is not a winter-warmer sonically, yet there is warmth in the depths of the music.

No song titles, just numbers that look like track timings but aren't. This 2CD is minimalist in terms of instrumentation and atmospherics, but musically it is rich and full of emotion - somewhere between Eric Serra, Wolfgang Voigt and Scott of the Antartic.

"I may be gone some time."

Wonderful, relaxing music to chill out to. The photography/cover art fits the music perfectly. Shame there is very little information about the artists (no leaflet inside) or the tunes. The album comprises 2 CDs, each with 12 tracks, and the tracks are simply numbered 03:18, 03:19.. and so on, so in that respect the album is a bit of an enigma. The price (£17-ish at the time of reviewing) is quite steep at the moment, and probably reflects the fact that it's not that well-known, but it is a good album.

I am a fan of mr. Sakamoto and have 1996 and Beauty, which are lovely albums. This , to me, is the dullest music I've heard in a long time. I'm sure the artier customer will call it cerebral and abstract, but I'll stick with tedious, disjointed and painfully, painfully...... dull.
