Product Description

Product Description

The seventh edition of White’s Fluid Mechanics offers students a clear and comprehensive presentation of the material that demonstrates the progression from physical concepts to engineering applications and helps students quickly see the practical importance of fluid mechanics fundamentals. The wide variety of topics gives instructors many options for their course and is a useful resource to students long after graduation. The book’s unique problem-solving approach is presented at the start of the book and carefully integrated in all examples. Students can progress from general ones to those involving design, multiple steps and computer usage.

From the Publisher

1. Over 1500 total problems. 500 new problems divided into categories of "regular problems", "applied problems," "comprehensive applied problems," "design projects," "word problems" and "FE (fundamentals of engineering exam) problems." The applied and comprehensive applied problems provide a real-world window into Fluid Mechanics, rather than just the standard "plug and chug" type problems. The design projects enable students to actually apply their knowledge of fluid mechanics in a hands-on format. Certain problems in the text are also identified with a computer disk icon as those that could be solved using the computer and a technical calculation package such as EES or Mathcad. 20% of the problems are in English units; 80% SI.
There are 95 new multiple-choice problems which simulate the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam.
Answers to 640 selected even-numbered problems are now included in text. (back of book)
Perforated and laminated "Key Equations Card" included with text. (after chapter 1)
New sections on "Problem Solving Methodology" and "Engineering Uncertainty" now included in chapter 1.
Chapter opening photo for each chapter. (beginning of each chapter)
Chapter 2 now contains a complete derivation of the formulas for determining floating body stability.
New instruments, such as the fused-quartz bourdon tube, the resonant silicon transducer, and Coriolis mass-flow meters, have been added to the text.
Chapter 7 introduces biological adaptation to flow.
Chapter 8 has an extensive new section on Computational Fluid Dynamics, both viscous and inviscid, steady and unsteady, plus an illustration and critique of commercial CFD codes.
Chapter 9 gives repeated illustrations of how the new equation solvers such as EES are gradually replacing the still-retained compressible flow tables of App. B.
Chapter 10 introduces new, real-world open-channel flow problems and design projects, taken from the author's experience with hydropower projects.
Chapter 11 introduces new material on compressors.
Now available with or without the EES (Engineering Equation Solver) Problems Disk which contains examples that demonstrate how to use EES programs that have been developed to solve some of the problems in the book. EES programs developed for this book are denoted in the text with a disk symbol. The EES engine is available free to those who adopt the text with the problems disk and will be distributed via a copy protected password system on the web. Be sure to give the course coordinator's name and address to account management once you verify the adoption to ensure the school receives the password.
Tips about applying EES are sprinkled in the text. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The text was well written, but the lack of supplemental information (conversion tables, property tables, etc.) was very disturbing while solving problems. Most books of this type contain extensive tables, it is truly a hastle to have to find another book for these conversion factors and properties.

I found the core text for the fluids course at my university a little wordy, so I tried this book by Frank White. White uses a combination of worded explanations to illustrate the equations that he writes in vector notation (the equivalent scalar notation used by our course tutor could easily be figured out).

Concepts such as hydrostatics, control volume analysis and dimensional analysis are well covered, as are differential equations for fluid motion, although those on advanced courses may need a more detailed text.

This would be a good text for someone studying fluid mechanics at the start of a degree (or similar) course.

i bought it because my lecturer recommended it. the author, frank white is really experienced regarding fluid characteristics and its mechanics. the content, it's quite complex(hence the 4 star, not really student friendly) but still understandable. there are a lot of examples in, and it really helps you understand the topic better because the examples were quite challenging(i think so). and the examples were set to be easier first and then to the next level and so on. there are a lot of questions after the topic, so you can do extra exercises before the exams to make sure you've covered all the important parts.
