Ron Jackson's name is imprinted on jazz as one of the greats. Hi s career has included international performances with jazz greats like Taj Majal, Benny Golson, Oliver Lake, with diverse groups like the Boy's Choir of Harlem, Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers, David Krakauer's Klezmer and Madness and in instrumental ensembles for Broadway shows such as 'Rent', 'Avenue Q' and 'Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Da Funk'. And after listening to this wildly entertaining album Ron Jackson will not need to have his name associated with any other famous ones: he has arrived on his own terms!
FLUBBY DUBBY is a series of nine tracks performed by Jackson's 'organ Trio' - Ron Jackson, guitar, Kyle Koeler, organ, Otis Brown III, drums (with a step in on 2 track performances by Don Braden, tenor sax and Bruce Williams, alto sax - 'Love Ballad' and 'Long and Winding Road'). Some of the numbers are Jackson's compositions while the others are made by Jackson and his trio into what should become standards of performance. There is a full throated blues and country and big band and soul sound that lands in the middle of individual songs. Somehow Jackson and friends find the core of each of these songs and make them ring like few other musicians can.
Jackson is a brilliant guitarist and composer but his humanity is always evident: never does he overshadow the ensemble, always giving full stage spotlight to each member in turn. This is an album that should alter the manner in which people respond to the name of Ron Jackson. It is a solid hit. Grady Harp, August 11
