Review

Jo Self paints flowers in a style that is deliberately remote from botanical art ... None aims at botanical accuracy, but each one illuminates its subject, presenting the flower with vigour and zest so that it attains quasi-iconic status (House & Garden )

There is much to be learned from the way poets and artists look at the natural world ... (Sunday Telegraph )

Product Description

Jo Self spent two years as artist-in-residence at Kew Gardens, a position created specially for her. Her bold, deceptively simple large-scale paintings of flowers are a striking blend of the sensuous and the symbolic.

Self has been painting flowers since 1993, and this book is a record and an exploration of her work. The first part of the book contains four essays, each discussing a different aspect of Self's work. The contributors will be: the author and broadcaster Will Self - Jo Self's brother-in-law - the garden writer Elspeth Thomspon and the art critic Sarah Kent. Also included is a revealing interview with the artist by the critic Cathy Courtney. The second part of the book contains full-colour reproductions Jo Self's bold, compelling paintings. This book also features newly commissioned photographs of Jo's studio and garden in South London.

5.0 out of 5 stars Big and bold, 21 Jan 2005
By
ILONACAT (WIRRAL, ENGLAND) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Flowers (Hardcover)
If you like flower-paintings to be nice, delicate little things, this is not the book for you. If, on the other hand, you are excited by bold colours and a superb handling of paint, you will probably like it. Many of the paintings were painted during Self's 2-year residency at Kew Gardens, so some of the flowers are exotic. Other paintings explore flowers you may well have in your garden. I say "explore" because she doesn't simply depict in a botanical sense. These flowers have real passion-in one sense, they form a kind of psychodrama.

I don't like the term "coffee-table book" but you could put this on your coffee-table. It is a lovely book, and would make a good gift. Unlike many artbooks of this quality, it is not unduly expensive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beauty for the sake of Beauty, 30 Oct 2004
By Grady Harp - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Flowers (Hardcover)
Jo Self is a British artist who paints flowers. That may not seem too out of the ordinary, but this book, simply and aptly titled FLOWERS, is a very special experience. Self was given a two-year fellowship at Kews where she spent her time observing gardens and painting flowers. These paintings are over-large (6 foot by 6 foot) blossoms that are celebratory and investigatory at the same time. The sheer magnificence of some of her selected blooms are overpowering yet very beautiful. Her observations and renderings of flowers on the wane are some of the more memorable works in this volume.

Accompanying this portfolio (of very fine color reproductions) are essays by author Will Self, art critic Sarah Kent and garden expert Elspeth Thompson, each of which adds a new dimension to the appreciation of nature from varied stances. A lovely book, this. Grady Harp, October 2004

4.0 out of 5 stars A cheerful book, 6 July 2007
By Sharon Orleans Lawrence "Artist" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Flowers (Hardcover)
Jo Self's book of her flower paintings is bright, colorful and cheery. It isn't a heavy-weight text on painting, but the plates are good. Self has an interesting approach to flower painting -- large, flat and modernist. If a reader is looking for classically painted flowers, this book won't fill the bill; however, there are few painters concentrating on flowers these days, and fewer books concentrating on flower painting apart from watercolor how-to. For those of us painting flowers, or any still life subject, for that matter, especially in large format, this is a good reference book. For those who just like to look at upbeat, colorful paintings, this is an excellent, friendly book.
