‘One of the best botanical field guides.’ Countryside

‘Winner by a couple of lengths.’ BBC Wildlife

Product Description

A leader in the field for almost 20 years, this guide provides comprehensive coverage of the trees, shrubs and flowering plants growing wild in the British Isles and in Europe from the Alps up to the Arctic, including Iceland. Over 1430 species are illustrated and over 1950 described, in systematic order, from trees to orchids and waterweeds.

Beautiful colour paintings are complemented by text which stresses the points most useful for quick identification. There are notes on ecology, lists of characteristic plants, a glossary, and indexes of scientific names. The keys are illustrated in colour, with the main key designed specially for beginners. Eight special keys allow identification of more difficult groups of plants.

About the Author

Marjorie Blamey – before becoming one of the leading British botanical artists of our time – was in turn a photographer, actress, wartime Red Cross nurse and ambulance driver, and with her husband ran a Cornish dairy farm for 20 years. They sold the farm in 1968 to make field botany and painting a new career. Since then, her books have sold nearly a million copies in many languages.
