Amazon.co.uk Review

This screen adaptation of Flowers in the Attic, Virginia Andrews' classic teen novel of adolescent torment and forbidden love, shies away from what made the book so hugely popular, namely the incestuous sex between the two older children, Cathy (Kristy Swanson) and Chris (Jeb Stuart Adams). When the father of four beautiful blond children is suddenly killed, their mother (Victoria Tennant) takes them to the family home she fled 17 years earlier. Their fierce and frightening grandmother (Louise Fletcher) locks them in an upstairs room, from which the only escape is into the cluttered and cobwebbed attic. The children's isolation gets more and more extreme as their mother abandons them, finally even slowly poisoning them to gain her father's inheritance. The movie insinuates but does not make explicit incestuous longing in all directions: Cathy's father brings her special presents before he dies, Chris scrubs Cathy's back in the tub, Chris has a noticeably stronger attachment to their mother than Cathy does--not to mention that the grandmother whips the half-naked mother in front of the grandfather. Fletcher brings a bit of bite to her role, and the movie occasionally rises to absurdly lurid zest. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

I agree that the film is not faithful to the book at all. For example, there are no fierce, barking dogs anywhere in the novel!! But it may still be worth watching for the horrid, dark atmosphere of Foxworth Hall given plenty of thunder & lightning treatment though. Just one more point that occurred to me: Cathy didn't seem as attractive in the film, and her relationship with Chris was as 'clean' as normal siblings. That was what killed it for me, personally.

A waste of time 14 Sep 2003

This video was a complete let-down compared with the novel. Although I expected some scenes to be modified as is standard with dramatisations, I was not prepared for the entire modification of the ending. The producer brushed over some areas such as the scene between Cathy and Chris in the attic, which could have been to make the film available for a younger audience, however I felt that without this key aspect, you are left without an explanation for later events.

The pace in certain areas of the film goes too fast, so there is no build-up of tension as the story progresses. Corrine is also portrayed as semi-evil from the start, which is not in keeping with the text, where she is shown as a loving and much loved mother who only changes later, under the influence of her twisted father and his millions.

However, if you are simply looking for a way to pass a couple of hours, there are worse things to do than watch this, but anyone expecting anything half as riveting as the novel, don't waste your time or money.

Shocking!! 21 July 2006

I am a huge fan of the book but this film just doesnt follow it at all! Very disappointing. It doesnt include major scenes as said in the other reviews and it makes you shout at the tv screen! You question why certain things were not put in the film?? If your going to make film based on a book then you should do it properly, and it could have been done so easily! Dont even get me started on the ending! This film had so much potential but it failed dismaly! A remake is needed. My advice is read the book and stop there because it spoils your imagination.

So Much Worse Than The Book!
If it was just a film, this film would be very good. However, when compared to the book, it's terrible! Loads of the book was left out and the ending was changed completely! Read more
