This is a wonderful and highly original novel about a mentally challenged man named Charlie who wanted to be smart. One day, his wish was granted. A group of scientists selected him for an experimental operation which would to raise his intelligence to genius level. Suddenly, Charlie found himself transformed, and life, as he knew it, changed.

His story is told entirely through Charlie's eyes and perceptions in the form of progress reports. The reader actually sees the change in Charlie take place, as his progress reports become more complex, well written, and filled with the angst of personal discovery and growth, as well as with his gradual awareness of his amazing and accelerated intellectual development.

The progress reports are a wonderful contrivance for facilitating the story, and the reader is one with Charlie on his voyage of self-discovery. What happens to Charlie in the long run is profoundly moving and thought provoking. It is no wonder that this author was the recipient of the Nebula Award which is given by the Science Fiction Writers of America for having written the Best Novel of the Year. This is definitely a book well worth reading.

I first read this book twenty five years ago as an assignment for English lit. Something made me think of it the other day and I tracked it down and ordered it through Amazon. It arrived yesterday afternoon and I finished it in the early hours of this morning, so I obviously found it to be as compelling as I did in 1974! However, although I could remember the basic theme, I approached the content afresh and from the view point of an adult who had gone through her own fair share of enlightening and self awareness experiences in the intervening years. Through Charlie's own words, as he writes his 'progris/progress' reports, we follow his progress through the experiment. Sympathetically written, it is designed to provoke questioning of our own thoughts and feelings towards disability, mental illness and tolerance. At various times I found it to be exhilarating, poignant, sad, moving and emotionally charged. It is such a well written book that I would heartily recommend it for old and young alike as it has to capacity to appeal to so many people on so many different levels. A fine read.

Definitely the most well written book I've read, it is possibly my favorite. Some of the themes you'll encounter include innocence, prejudice, acceptance, enlightenment, hope and loss. The story centers on Charlie, a mildly retarded janitor who is selected for an experimental intelligence enhancing procedure. It initially appears successful. Charlie adopts Algernon, a mouse that underwent the procedure before him. The two are watched closely to evaluate results. Results are assessed by the aid of Charlie's written journal. The entire book consists of excerpts of the journal he writes. We gradually learn about Charlie's disturbing life as he begins to recall his childhood. This only adds to the reader's genuine admiration for his pleasant temperament. By the end of the book we truly care about Charlie, and watch helplessly as the inevitable occurs. The last few pages are as moving as any book could possibly be. The book is very funny at times. But the issues are painfully serious. Every reader has undoubtedly experienced emotions in real life that are echoed here. And despite many difficult scenes I raced on through this book, intent on finishing the great and terrible journey with Charlie. It is one I will not forget.
