5.0 out of 5 stars Twitter, ghosts and a wee dram 10 Aug 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Flower of Scotland is a diverse collection of dark fiction from William Meikle. From Medieval Scotland, to the Tay Bridge at the height of the Industrial Revolution and on to encompass the Twitter age, Meikle covers a lot of ground in his stories, some of which are very short indeed.

A few tropes keep cropping up within the collection, though never enough to become cliched. Men spend scary nights alone in their homes drinking whiskey and mourning dead wives. Twitter is full of surprising people with motives far beyond live tweeting the latest episode of Glee.

There's a recurring problem with italic text on my Kindle edition that suggests tags haven't been closed somewhere, but this is a minor piffling quibble for a confident collection of enjoyable stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Good - Really Creepy! 4 July 2012
By Annie W
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Each story in this collection - billed as Dark Fantasy - is unique, and very different to any I have read before. The further through them I read, the more spine tingling I found them. The stories flow in beautifully clear and descriptive prose, matched to the setting of each tale, and move from the historic past (although it's Dunnottar, not Dunnotar Castle) into the realms of modern technology; from beaches to hospitals; from the young to the old.

There is the odd error ('an unusual phenomena'), but the whole book is so good that it hardly matters, and I'll certainly be buying more by this author.

My only gripe is that the formatting does not allow you to access a specific story from the index.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark Fiction at its finest 17 Oct 2012
By DJP
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Another short story collection, another brilliant set of tales.
These ones are mostly Dark - ranging from the disturbing power of technology, to the dark and sad yearning of the heart, through a classic chiller of the Lovecraftian oeuvre, and even some good old Historical terror from Middle Ages Scotland.

Written with the author's constant eye for a page turner, clever story ideas on common themes of genre fiction, and simply the best in atmospheric brooding - the only problem with this collection is that you'll have finished it in one go and need more of the same!!
