New Audrey Howard readers - start here. Well you might as well as this 'new' novel of hers contains so many rehashes of her other books that it might as well act as a back catalogue for them. In this novel you will find a wedding night scene straight from 'When Morning Comes', numerous echoes of 'A World of Difference' and also of 'Tomorrow's Memories'.
However despite the similarity to her previous works Ms Howard has crafted a fast flowing and highly plotted romantic novel. And that might just be the problem, as sometimes it feels that the plot has got in the way of the strong characterisation that is normally her forte. Both the lead characters are loosly sketched, and for some reason Chad Cameron never really becomes real to the reader, thus depriving the novel of a strong romantic male lead character, which of course weakens the story. Ms Howard fairs better with her handling of the female characters but even so she seems to struggle at times and some of her descriptions of character traits seem at odd with one another. Briony is described as being thin and waif like at one point, only for her to be described as healthy and well nourished a few pages later. These may seem like minor points but they do grate for the reader.
I have awarded Ms Howard three stars for this novel, as I do enjoy her novels even if in recent years they have seemed to get more formularic, but if it was a real report I would but in the comments, too much reliance on old material - we know you can do far better!!
