5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational painting of colorful flowers in watercolour., 5 Dec 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Flower Painting: How to Paint Free and Vibrant Watercolours (Paperback)
This is a book on how to paint flowers freely in wastercolour with the emphasis on colour. It is filled with many of Paul Riley's vibrant watercolours of flowers.

It begins with encouragement to study and learn from the techniques and styles of past painters, including Monet and Renoir and shows how they can inspire the way we paint today.

It has a very useful chapter on materials (including improvised tools) with many demonstrations for their use.

Following this in an invaluable section on techniques specific to painting flowers in watercolour. In addition, the reader is taught how to observe flowers individually and en masse and to take into account the effect of light. Armed with these new techniques and observation skills, the reader is encouraged to see flowers as part of a composition.

The remainder of the book skilfully guides you in setting up compositions, the use of colour and their complementaries and in achieving mood and atmosphere. For those interested there is also a short chapter on perpective relating to this subject.

Overall, this is an inspiring book. Paul Riley is generous with his knowledge and throughpout the book, there are clearly explained staged demonstrations of his paintings.

1.0 out of 5 stars A book for beginners!, 13 April 2006
By Thomas - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Flower Painting (Hardcover)
I agree with the reviews here that this book is for beginners. Why? When I opened this book and saw the paintings inside, I felt as though I were looking at paintings done by someone who had just begun to paint and was taking a brush and just splashing color all over the canvas. Any beginner would be thrilled to learn from this book, because to duplicate what this artist has done would seem quite simple to do. I realize that this is just my opinion of an artist's work. Apparently he is well received and has won many awards. But, I could not even get passed the paintings to get to the text to see if it was actually of any value, because I felt the paintings were so horrid. I don't write many reviews, but this was something for which I felt strongly. I'm so glad I only paid $4 for a used copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Paul Riley Flower Painting, 5 July 2002
By D. Healy - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Flower Painting (Hardcover)
Excellent innovative approach to painting flowers in watercolor. Paul Riley departs from the standard format of predictable how to books and speaks of research and investigation, planning and preparation, exactly as he might as a teacher. (He runs successful painting workshops from his studio in Devon.) Flowers are synonymous with color and Riley is a consummate colorist. He uses unusual tools, calligraphy brushes and bamboo pens to achieve his effects. Beautiful color, articulately written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book for Beginner and Advanced Alike, 3 Aug 2010
By Gayle K. Bodine "cookbook lover" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Flower Painting: How to Paint Free and Vibrant Watercolours (Paperback)
I love art books and have been painting seriously since the '80s. This is the most beautiful book on flower painting I have ever seen. His subtext "How to paint free and vibrant watercolours" is a great description. His use of color, shape, pattern and innovation is remarkable. No stiffness or predictability here. Thanks Paul for something fresh and stunning.
