Product Description

Synopsis

"Flotsam is the Stuff that Floats" is a story about family secrets, survival and fish. When a violent hurricane signals the birth of a new child in a close-knit family, it is the first of many storms that must be faced. Set in an American coastal community, the novel explores the changing dynamics of a family and the effects of an unacknowledged mental illness, suffered by Bernadette, the youngest sister. Although heartbreaking at times, the story remains hopeful, as it reveals the unsaid truths that threaten to tear a family apart, and the mysterious bonds that hold them firmly together.

definitely not jetsam 10 April 2007
By Kate
Format:Paperback
I really enjoyed travelling with Gloria on her journey through adolescence to adulthood and I felt I became part of her massive and chaotic family. Growing up in America by the ocean with her parents, brother and sisters not to mention the extended crowd of Italian American aunties and uncles, Gloria struggles to cope with life with her troubled sister Bernadette and her siblings. A wonderful description of family life and its humours and horrors. I look forward to the accompanying recipe book - the many dishes described made my mouth water. I heartily recommend this novel and look forward to reading the next one by this new author.

This is definitely not a book to throw overboard!

Loved this book 7 Jun 2007

Format:Paperback
I really enjoyed this novel; interesting family dynamics, humor and great characters. Despite the narrator's problematic childhood and early adulthood, the final message is one of hope and of the possibility of transformation.

absorbing 10 May 2007
Format:Paperback
I got very absorbed in this family story and wanted to know how things turned out - especially for Bernadette and Gloria. The writing is natural and flows well, the characters are believable and I cared about them. Particularly liked Uncle Tony.

Well done to the author and I hope to read more of her books. An engrossing read.
