5.0 out of 5 stars A great find! 1 Dec 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I've been hooked on this album for weeks and it's quite a varied and enjoyable hip/trip-hop album. The opening track is mellow and reminded me of Lemonjelly, but this soon disappears into the beaty delights of track 2 with DJ-Shadow-esque percussion. 'Newsflash' is an underrated classic - I LOVE this track. Virtually every song is great. Listen and enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Diplo: a magnet to those seeking genuine, groundbreaking music 6 Oct 2006
By Art Vanderlay - Published on
Format:Audio CD
Nobody sounds like Diplo. Many may try to match his visionary style of dj-ing and production, but none will ever come close. Diplo's brilliance helps to underscore everything that is wrong with most dj/producers today by consistantly displaying his abilty to create unique music and dj sets that move, not just your arse, but your soul.

'Florida' is not the type of album you will see challenging Usher or 50 Cent to the number one spot. It is more likely to challenge your concept of music through its subtle, almost warped take on hip-hop and electronica. Comparisons to DJ Shadow have emerged in relation to Diplo, but close comparison of the two is enough to dismiss that claim.

'Florida' is not a party album that will get the booty shakin', it will however provide the listener with a sonic treat of undeniably unique and beautiful sounds fresh from the great Diplo.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wanted to give it 4 soooo bad...but not quite. 3 Mar 2005
By Michael Saltzman - Published on
Format:Audio CD
Ok, so Diplo is, as you've probably noticed, being compared to likes of DJ Shadow and RJD2. Well, lemme start by saying this man creates some amazing loops on this album, his drum sampling is impressive and his melody's are usually pretty strong. I would most definitely put him on par with RJD2, but he doesn't come close to Shadow. All the tracks on this album are NICE, but the problem comes in that they are much too repetative and a few seem slightly overproduced. He will do a loop for X amount of time and then create a break, but that pattern gets old fast. I really like the core of every song, but I find myself getting bored by a lot of tracks after a minute or two. Also, there are several tracks, like Diplo rhythm and Indian Thick Jawns, which would be amazing if it weren't for some of the vocalists. I can tell he's trying really hard, and he's talented, so if you're into DJs or trip-hop i would definitely recommend picking this up if you want a nice surprise. I'm seriously looking forward to his next album in spite my slight dissapointment with this one. If he keeps improving he's going to be a force to reckon with.

5.0 out of 5 stars prepare to be blown away 29 Sep 2004
By J. Blaze - Published on
Format:Audio CD
This CD is brilliant. Diplo is being lumped in with the likes of DJ Shadow and RJD2 and it shows. He exhibits the same layered arrangements and attention to detail but still puts out his own unique sound. Amazing elements of jazz, hip-hop, ragga, turntablism, female vocals, the whole 9. It's one of the few CDs that I actually will pay for after downloading.

This is the real effin deal, folks. Hop on the Diplo train now, because this cat is destined to blow up, and you'll want to say you were down way back when.

4.0 out of 5 stars Diplo has it. 28 Jun 2006

Hi...It looks like a bunch of white electronica kids wrote the other reviews, so here is a different take. I grew up on rap music of all types...I think this guy dplo is onto something special.

The overall feel of his music is very unique, rhythmic, and worldly, and its got a realness that alot of these other white guys with laptops don't have, I can tell he's not really a tourist but he gets into it...if that makes any sense. Other than this, the only other new music I'm really feeling is Sa-Ra, Ryan Leslie, bootlegs I got in LA of some guy named Sid K, and whatever the Neptunes are producing. WE NEED MORE STUFF LIKE THIS

Definitely looking forward to whatever Diplo puts out, he's definitely still raw, but its not just for hipsters, buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Diplo - Florida 2 Mar 2011
By scoundrel - Published on
Format:Audio CD
Diplo, who helped M.I.A. craft her stunning debut, releases his own stunning debut, FLORIDA. ANd while you might think of Florida as full of retirees and Cuban exiles, Diplo shows that it's just as full with musical visionaries. The string section on "Big Lost" seems oddly out of place with the thick beats and the Wurlitzer, but, damn it, it works! The "try anything" aesthetic is on full display here, with "Sarah" going from moody with its piano line, then turning sunny once a brass section comes it. Martina Topley-Bird lends her vocals to the swirling "Into the Sun," a track built mainly on backspinning. "Way More" has these intriguing mini-horn builds and a recurring theme that circles around itself, then fades away completely, while "Money Power Respect" is all double bass... and bass until the samples of the two kids talking take it in a different direction. "Diplo Rhythm" takes the vocal percussion of baile funk and sets it against a blippy digital backdrop, while the longer "Work" seems like several disparate songs segued together. But "Summer's Gonna Hurt You" pulls things back, a slow and melancholy piece that grows psychedelic. An auspicious debut.
