Product Description

Product Description

Flora Fydraacca should know better than to take shortcuts in her family home, Crackpot Hall. Ever since her mother banished the magickal butler years earlier, Crackpot's rooms move about at random. Or at least some do - Flora's never figured out how big her own House really is. But everything changes on the day Flora, late for school, decides to take a shortcut by way of Crackpot's unpredictable Elevator. BIG mistake...

4.0 out of 5 stars Terrific all-ages fantasy novel, 25 Sep 2008
By Ian Williams "ianw" (Sunderland, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
First novel and the first in a very promising series with an unusual and imaginative background.

The location is Califa, an alternate world California where magic works. Califa is a nominally independent state ruled by a benign dictator but dominated by the savage Huitzil Empire.

Flora is almost-fourteen and her mother is the General of Califa's army. She's an interesting pugnacious and awkward character on the cusp of adulthood (in Califa) and facing several problems, not least the fact that she's fading away. Apart from that she has complicated family problems, doesn't think things through properly, and is generally quite snarky.

The book is well-written and at times has echoes of SF writer Jack Vance's love for ornate prose, though it is always readable. I enjoyed it so much I went and ordered the just released (in America) sequel before I'd even finished this one. I'm looking forward to finding out more about Poppy and her world.

An unexpected treat.
