Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Get your ideas off the ground and design your dream home with the Floorplan 3D Home Design Suite 7.0 CD-ROM. This program is for those designing the interior or exterior of their home, adding an extension or simply re-modelling a particular room.

You drag-and-drop walls, windows, doors and furniture to quickly create the look you want and then you can call up a photo-realistic 3D representation of your designs to bring it alive. In theory this sounds a good way of seeing how your plans could work out before you give the builders the go-ahead but be aware that it may take a while to master the tools. You have to learn how to measure distances within your drawings and how to display and hide dimensions. Still there is a good, thorough user’s guide that takes you through different applications (for example, how to insert and draw a wall). Using a cursor to create a wall is undoubtedly a lot simpler than using a pencil and a ruler and has the advantage of allowing you to easily delete any mistakes.

You can also add outside features to your home like balconies, driveways, fences and gates. For people planning their home or garden this is undeniably a handy tool but those who are unfamiliar with this way of working may need a bit of practice (although you should soon master the software). An additional handy feature is that any ideas can be saved on the Internet so you can share them with your friends and families.--Justin Hunt

1.0 out of 5 stars Floorplan 3D V7.0, 16 Dec 2002

S Ellerker (York, North Yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This package holds so much promise when you read the description of what it should do, and how easy it should be - unfortunately, my advice would be to ignore the description entirely! The software is virtually unusable because of the following reasons :

1) Objects are in US format.
2) Even though objects are editable, there are too many restrictions, and there are far too many difficulties involved in attempting to edit existing objects. It would be far quicker to draw them in Autocad from scratch.
3) There seem to be numerous hidden illogical rules dictating where you can place objects like stairs, windows, etc., making it impossible to get a realistic interpretation of what your house actually looks like.
4) If you have a conservatory, don't bother with this ... at all! You cannot build one!
5) Incorporating newly drawn objects into the "database" is far too difficult and un-intuitive.
6) You cannot have a wall painted a different colour on each side - you paint a wall on one side, and it assumes that it is the same colour on the other - and there isn't anything you can do about it.
7) You can ONLY construct simple wall layouts - anything too complex, and the software will simply does what it feels like, and never what you want.

All in all, there are 101 other complaints I could make about this package - my advice would be to look elsewhere, or to try and find a CAD package that you can teach yourself to use - trust me ... it would be much quicker, easier and far less frustrating than trying to get to grips with this. I think it is shocking that the software is still this BAD in version 7 -SEVEN ?!?!?!?!

For any European software house out there - please can you take this idea and develop it as it should have been developed in the 1st place!?!?!?

1.0 out of 5 stars Computer-Aided Nightmare!!!, 1 April 2003
This review is from: Floorplan 3D Home Design Suite V.7 & FREE Complete Home Decorating Book (CD-ROM)
This product is definitely not for the person who has no connections with the building trade or a PHD in architectural design! The software is a nightmare and not user-friendly - that is unless you want to purchase a hardcopy of the manual or some of the other guides published by the software manufacturor - why is it not included??? Anyway, to learn how to use this software would take longer than getting a good builder to build the extension so, unless you have six months to spare!!? This must be the worst piece of software I've bought in years and as I actually design software systems I have a slight advantage of knowing what a good UI should provide. It is aimed at the building professional not a family wanting to visualise a potential house extension!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not as Good as I Thought, 31 Dec 2002
This review is from: Floorplan 3D Home Design Suite V.7 & FREE Complete Home Decorating Book (CD-ROM)
Firstly I am not a builder, architect or similar. What I wanted was a product that I could use to space plan my house. I have architectural drawings of my house so nothing could be simpler, or so I thought!

I have had the product 2 days and have just completed drawing 4 walls, none of the windows or doors which I would have thought to be standard are included, particularly the doors. There is only one appliance, no washing machine, fridge, cooker etc. Terminology used is very American (chair rail read dido rail and god only knows what a Wainscote is). Measurements are approximate only and change on their own as you draw the walls.

Objects like chairs and settee’s can be created but you have to be able to design these in 3D and import them into the program. There are some sites that already have these objects created but the choice is very limited. Strangely they have a large selection of pictures to hang on walls but no work surface for the kitchen.

This product is not for people who just want to play around or live outside the US. It’s very complicated and has many known ‘bugs’ that have not been fixed in this version.

I would strongly recommend you look in the Forum of their website before you buy this product.

Personally I want my money back

Chris
