If you are not already a dyed in the wool Cope-addict, this is probably not a bad place to start, but I warn you you could end up buying the man's complete works before you get that monkey off your back. Full of idiot savant noise, shrieking guitars and infectious tunes, this is an excellent little compilation of mini-classics ("Reynard The Fox", "The Greatness and Perfection of Love", etc) odds and sods from the first phase of his solo career, as he marked the transition from Teardrop Explodes frontman to solo artist. Much as I love the Teardrops, it is in his solo records that Julian Cope really started to push the envelope, take risks and deal with the subjects he really wanted to write and sing about. The arch druid's musical influences are varied and he wears his heart on his sleeve but what I like about him most is his determination to follow his own path, not caring if he may sometimes stumble and fall on the way. So yes, there are faults and imperfections here but there are also some great songs ("Hey, Hey,High Class Butcher", for example, is stunning) and some thought-provoking lyrics sung with passion from behind a punky-psychedelic krautrock soundscape. When Julian shrieks as he does on "Double Vegetation", he means it man. The musical influences also may not always be obvious - check out his excellent Funkadelic interpretation in the "Soul Medley". But indeed when you think about it "free your mind and your ass will follow" seem totally appropriate lyrics for St Julian to sing. Another little gem, and testament to the variety on show here, is "Robert Mitchum" which perfectly encapsulates the half-asleep charm of the American actor.Read more ›

Julian Cope at his best

But I still Have a bee in my bonnet regarding repackaged albums.

Thats why I give 3 stars

At the record company meeting
On their hands - a dead star
And oh, the plans they weave
And oh, the sickening greed

At the record company party
On their hands - a dead star
The sycophantic slags all say :
"I knew him first, and I knew him well"

Re-issue ! Re-package ! Re-package !
Re-evaluate the songs
Double-pack with a photograph
Extra Track (and a tacky badge)

A-list, playlist
"Please them , please them !"
"Please them !"
(sadly, THIS was your life)

But you could have said no
If you'd wanted to
You could have said no
If you'd wanted to

BPI, MTV, BBC
"Please them ! Please them !"
(sadly this was your life)

But you could have said no
If you'd wanted to
You could have walked away
...Couldn't you ?

I touched you at the soundcheck
You had no real way of knowing
In my heart I begged "Take me with you ...
I don't care where you're going..."

But to you I was faceless
I was fawning, I was boring
Just a child from those ugly new houses
Who could never begin to know

Who could never really know
Oh ...

Best of ! Most of !
Satiate the need
Slip them into different sleeves !
Buy both, and feel deceived

Climber - new entry, re-entry
World tour ! ("media whore")
"Please the Press in Belgium !"
(THIS was your life...)

And when it fails to recoup ?
