Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Zoe ran. Harder than she had ever run in her life. Her feet pounded through the deserted streets of derelict buildings. Somewhere, not far behind, she could hear the gang coming after her. It felt as if her heart would burst but she didn't slow down. She'd been planning to leave the island for a long time but had been putting it off. It was a big decision to set out to sea in a tiny rowing boat. Now she had no choice.

Floodland is an extraordinary novel, set some time in the not too distant future in a land that has been reclaimed by the sea. Zoe last saw her father and her sick mother as they sailed away on the last boat from Norwich, leaving her to face the future alone. She finds her way to Eel Island, a place where mobs rule in a bid for survival in a dark, dank graveyard of a world.

This is stunning debut novel from Marcus Sedgwick and one in which the reader is instantly transported to the watery wastelands of the Fens via strong characterisation and an atmospheric tension that envelops the reader in a sea mist that chills to the bone. The odds are against survival but as reluctant relationships develop, built on the shaky foundations of need rather than any form of trust, Sedgwick captures the essence of human nature by never passing judgement on even the bad guys, preferring instead to make them, quite simply, human beings who have been forced to recognise the survival of the fittest.

Floodland is a challenging novel for older readers who will be captivated by a vision of the future that is not so unbelievable. Age 11 and over. --Susan Harrison

This book is a one-off. Marcus Sedgwick has created an excellent book that young readers just can't put down.

The book is about a small girl called Zoe, who is living on Norwich, which is nearly an island. She finds a boat in an old warehouse and decides to travel to find more mainland, and possibly find her parents who escaped on a ship after being mistaken Zoe was going on board as well.

Once reaching an island called 'the eels' she finds a boy called Dooby, and many other children who believe Dooby is their leader. Once Zoe discovers what Dooby wants to do to her and her boat, she has to find a way to escape.

This story is a great read...and you're glued to it until you've reached the end.

This is a good short fantasy story, and the author's debut, but it's not as good or as well-developed as some of his later novels. That said, the theme is climate change and global warming, so very topical and well-worth reading.

All her life, Zoe has only known rising water levels and hardship. She grew up on the island of Norwich with her parents, which has been gradually disappearing under more and more water each year. Many people have left the island, and when Zoe's parents decide it's time to make a dash for the last boat taking people from the island, in the chaos and confusion Zoe gets left behind and has to fend for herself. Life on the island is tough, food and water extremely scarce, and friends are few as everyone is out for themselves. Zoe finds a boat one day and works on it to make it seaworthy... she's found an escape route, but will she be able to get away from Norwich? and even if she makes it out to sea is there any chance that she'll be able to find her parents and be reunited with them...

Zoe's story is tough, reminiscent at times of Lord of the Flies. The author paints a picture of an England gradually being subsumed by the sea, with the resulting chaos and shortages of supples that would come with such a scenario. At such times human nature can degenerate to a degree of brutality akin to war - and we are spared no details here.

A useful book and a good read. I can recommend it for older children and young adults.

The Future 8 Nov 2008
By Lincs Reader TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This novel is aimed at older children and won the Branford Boase Award.

The story is set some time in the not too distant future. England has been almost completly reclaimed by the sea. Zoe, the heroine of the story hasnt seen her father and her sick mother since they sailed away from the island of Norwich on the last boat to leave, Zoe was accidentally left behind and has had to face life alone. Zoe comes across an abandoned old boat and spends hours making it seaworthy, she escapes and makes her way to Eel Island (which is actually Ely Cathedral, with the spires still standing). Eel Island is ruled by a strange young boy called Dooby and there she meets an old man William who tells her some odd stories - he tells Zoe about the days before England was flooded and people could actually drive from Norwich to Ely Cathedral.

The story continues with Zoe's journey. It is often quite tough and chaotic and I was reminded of Lord Of the Flies in places. This is a topical book - looking at climate change and global warming and what could actually happen in the future. It also shows how human beings can be brutal when it comes to self-preservation.

I really enjoyed this book and will definitely read more of his work.
