Review

Told from the bird's eye view of a resident raven, this is a deliciously topsy-turvy comedy full of unusual details. The Otherhand family are far from normal and life in Otherhand Castle is distinctly strange. Edgar the raven cares little for them but, given his view point, he can't help noticing that things are going very wrong indeed. Edgar's account of the Otherhand's family life and how they deal with the danger that is besetting them is as original as it is weird. (Julia Eccleshare LOVEREADING4KIDS.COM )

The quirky illustrations are perfect for this book and readers who enjoyed the Series of Unfortunate Events will love this too. (Katherine Jennings WATERSTONE'S BOOKS QUARTERLY )

This thrilling bit of Gormenghast-lite will appeal to anyone who enjoyed the Series of Unfortunate Events, or who just likes a nice gothic story. The characters are well drawn and since this is the start of a series it bodes well for the future. (Steve Birt, Gloucester WATERSTONES.COM )

Edgar, the 'self guardian saviour of Otherhand Castle' is a wonderful creation: vain, pompous and pleased with himself, he narrates the story of FLOOD AND FANG with wit. (Toby Clements DAILY TELEGRAPH )

This is a wonderful, entertaining read, very similar to the Gormenghast and Series of Unfortunate Events books. The characters are well rounded and Solstice and Edgar are likeable characters. The book's illustrations enhance the story as well. A fangtastic adventure! 8/10 (PA SYNDICATED REVIEW )

Flood and Fang is as funny and twisted as the members of the Otherhand family themselves... You'll laugh when you read this book - a lot. (TRAPPEDBYMONSTERS.COM )

The tale itself is told with extraordinary wit and razor sharp repartee; Edgar is a comical genius (if it were possible for Ravens to be comical or geniuses) somehow making the ridiculous and preposterous into one big laugh after the other. (THETRUTHABOUTBOOKS )

'it's all good foul fun" (BOOKS FOR KEEPS )

"Edgar, our raven narrator, lives in Otherhand Castle with a hopeless family who keep needing Edgar to come to their rescue. In this first book, the peril comes from a flooded castle and a prowling scaly monster. Edgar is grumpy, self-important and extremely good company, and the family is as mad a bunch as you could hope to meet in a fantastical castle (including the delightful Solstice who says "Gasp!" a lot, and her brother Cudweed's disagreeable monkey)." (Daniel Hahn THE INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY )

"Flood and Fang is one big bundle of fun from start to finish, and it's my new favourite book in the 8-12 age range. I've lost count of how many times I had to put it down because I was laughing so much, but lets just say it was a lot!" (Jenny WONDROUSREADS BLOG )

"The story rattles along at a fast pace and Pete Williamson's inky illustrations add much to the weird fun of the plot and characters. A lively hoot from beginning to end." (YOUNG POST )

The very first page of this book made me laugh out loud and it has been a pleasure to read this to my 7 year old, who begs for more and more chapters each night.

Told by an elderly raven called Edgar, in gentle homage to Edgar Allen Poe's famous bird, there are constant echoes of the Gormenghast Trilogy, with a variety of mad characters, not least of which is the very castle they all live in. Lord Valevine keeps trying to show that frogs produce thunder and lightening with bad consequences for the frogs. Minty wanders round the kitchens ignoring the constant dangers her baby twins are in. Solstice has a ribbon tied round her neck having come back from her first Vampire Ball with two neat puncture marks at her throat. Cudweed roams about with his loathesome monkey Fellah, much hated by Edgar - while Edgar himself is trying to save the lot of them from something nasty lurking in the depths of the drowning cellars of the castle.

Marcus Sedgwick makes great use of language, stretching a child's vocabulary, as well as marvellous alliteration so it's a joy to read out loud.

Strongly recommended for anyone 7 and up - and we are hugely looking forward to the next in the series.

So much FUN! 30 Sep 2009
By Jenny, Wondrous Reads TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Flood and Fang is one big bundle of fun from start to finish, and it's my new favourite book in the 8-12 age range. I've lost count of how many times I had to put it down because I was laughing so much, but lets just say it was a lot!

The Raven Mysteries is narrated by Edgar, an old raven watching over the mismatched Otherhand family. His thoughts are blunt and hilarious, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading his observations on life in the castle. His open hatred of little Cudweed's pet monkey, Fellah, is a constant source of humour, as is his distaste for toddler twins Buzz and Fizz.

The odd characters and gothic setting is reminiscent of The Addams Family, with children Solstice and Cudweed being like modern day incarnations of Wednesday and Pugsley. I was an Addams Family fan when I was younger, and I think this is one of the reasons why I loved Flood and Fang so much -- there's something endearing about absurd but comical characters, and Marcus Sedgwick has created a whole lovable family of them. The illustrations accompanying the text, drawn by Pete Williamson, are also fantastic. They capture the Otherhand family perfectly, and compliment the story more than I thought they would.

Although Flood and Fang isn't aimed at my age group, I absolutely loved it. I read it very quickly in one sitting, and started book two (Ghosts and Gadgets) straight away. I laughed my head off for the majority of the book, and completely lost myself in the crazy world of Edgar and the castle's inhabitants. Whether you're 12 or 22, this book is a pleasure to read, and deserves to be a huge seller in the 8-12 section. I can't wait for Lunatics and Luck to be released next year, and I'll definitely be rushing out to buy a copy.

Flood and Fang 2 May 2009
By Elrohir
Format:Hardcover
I started to read this book on the strength of having read Marcus Sedgwick's books 'My Sword Hand is Singing' and it's sequel 'Kiss of Death.' Whilst those books were for young adults 'Flood and Fang' will appeal to younger reader as well.

The story is narrated by Edgar a Raven who is the Guardian of Otherhand Castle, someone or something has invaded Otherhand Castle and it's upto Edgar to try and bring the Otherhand family together and save the day.

This book is full of wonderful gothic characters all with inventive names such as Cudweed and his pet Monkey 'Fellah' who is always trying to capture Edgar. There are some very funny moments and the illustrations are just brilliant.

Very good start to a new series that will appeal to fans of Chris Mould or Angie Sage 'Araminta Spooke series.
