Product Description

Synopsis

Flogging is one of the few S/M techniques that can be learned safely by experimentation. The learning can of course be much faster with high quality information and instruction, and that is exactly what is to be found in this book. Flogging is possibly the most popular activity in the erotic repertoire, and this book is the ultimate one stop guide. Offering sensations raging from gentle massage through tearing agony, this comprehensive guide to the whys and hows of flogging, by a long-time leatherman explains how to choose a flogger, create a scene, read your partner's mental and physical state, select patterns and strokes to create a palette of sensations, and much more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flogging by Joseph Bean 7 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback
As a relatively experienced Domme I enjoy flogging, as do most BDSM (Bondage and sado- masochism)- practicioners. I bought this book looking for new tips and inspiration, and boy, did I get some! This book has plenty of helpful facts and ideas from beginners to experienced players.

It includes a few scenarios (Both gay and straight) and uses them to explain different techniques, possibilities and helps you prevent making beginners mistakes. I wish I had this book when I started experimenting with BDSM, I would have come a lot further in less time.

The writer frequently urges you to get experience and practice techniques to become the best Top you can be for your partner and I think that`s great! Practice is key to flogging, and it will be fun for the Domme or Dom to see his or her progress as they get more and more accurate and get better control of their whip or flogger.

The book includes some heavy scenes, and someone who wants to use flogging as just a small way to spice things up their love life will probably think the book is too long and includes too many details.

I found the book to be inspiring and packed with useful facts. I would reckommend it to anyone interested in flogging. Even though it is mostly aimed at the tops, bottoms will also benefit from reading it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Certainly not bad, but... 10 May 2010
Format:Paperback
Seeng as Jay Wiseman is quoted on the back of the book praising it, it's hard for me not to feel more positively about it than I do.

From a content point of view, this is a great book, no doubt, but it feels as though the book doesn't really know what it wants to be. A very unique trait of this book is that it begins each chapter with a bit of erotica concerning a flogging scene, and then the "meat" of the chapter resides in poring over the scene described, how it illustrates the information the author wants to convey about flogging techniques, top and bottom interaction, scene dynamics and interpreting biological responses, among other topics. While this does seem like a good idea to prevent the book from becoming excessively "dry" and overly cold technical, I find that instead the segments of erotica distract the reader from the more educational content. Furtermore, the book contains four scenes, each catering to a particular orientation (i. e., straight male top and female bottom, straight female top and male bottom, gay male couple and gay female couple), presumably to eliminate any sense of descrimination or gender-role assignment, but I find that it just put me off the better part of half the book.

That said, the actual information provided is usefulm extensive and presented in a clear and concise manner. The technical aspects are covered in clear detail, albeit with the occasional localised reference that may or may not be universally understood properly. The book really shines in going beyond the mere matter of technique and delving into recognising and interpreting biological and subcounscious responses from the bottom (i. e., "reading" the bottom). Furthermore, in spite of the very simple title, the book doesn't just cover striking with what has been, for the most part, conventinally established to be a flogger, but also single tail whips, canes, paddles and more, as well as the maintenance of said objects.

On the whole, you should be able to overcome the negative aspects easily enough and enjoy the positive for its uniqueness and usefulness.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book for the SM Home Library 16 Jan 2001
By Midori - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
No, you can't learn how to flog from a book. So what can this book do for you? If you're a novice, it'll set you on the right track. If you're a slightly experienced player, it'll help finesse your technique and better understand the emotional components on both sides of the whip, and if you're an experienced player it'll give you insight into the art of flogging from one of the masters of this particular expression of pleasure.

Instead of taking a dry and clinical breakdown of the activity, Joseph creates a rich conversational style, weaving in many layers of technique into the discussion of each of the four scenes he describes. This creates a book that's a pleasure to refer back to as the reader's experience expands.

Some minor suggestions that I hope the publisher will consider for the next edition... I hope that they may expand the accompanying illustrations and add a detailed index in the back for ease in referencing....

I am happy to report that I have added "Flogging" to many of my suggested / required reading lists as part of my instructional materials for the various SM / Fetish educational seminars that I teach across the country.

Don't hesitate to pick up this book. Then, as Joseph himself recommends, practice, practice, practice!

Sincerely,

Fetish Diva Midori

3.0 out of 5 stars A good basic introduction to flogging. 19 Nov 2001
By TammyJo Eckhart - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Let me say immediately that as far as I know, this is the first and only book focused on flogging in a BDSM sense. Many books have looked at the history and techniques of corporal punishment but in a consensual relationship you'll need different guides. The book is structured to look at different aspects and issues related to flogging using four types of relationships falling under four different sexual orientations. The male top and female bottom chapter looks at the basics of flogging and negotiation. The gay male chapter examines the growth and compromise involved in a long-term SM relationship. The lesbian chapter examines how things can and indeed may well go wrong and how a couple moves passed the problems to explore flogging as a positive sexual activity. The female top and male bottom chapter unfortunately is a professional relationship that has slid into the long-term, serious Ds model -- this does not reflect the vast majority of such Ds relationships. After each chapter, Bean looks at what has happened in the scenerio. For the first two couples these are solid commentaries and build on each other. This starts to break down with the section on problems however and the analysis after the fourth couple doesn't really mention them or any other scene much at all. A pattern was going and it really needed to be followed to make this an outstanding book. As it is, it is useful for beginners and experienced floggers and floggees who want to think and learn about it all a bit more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Cool Guide to Flogging 13 Dec 2000
By Todd Hawley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Flogging is probably one of the most popular activities in BDSM. While I as a Dominant like to think of myself as being good with a flogger, I always strive to learn more. Reading this book has definitely caused me to do that. Joseph has put together a wonderful and very informative "guide" to this art. While Joseph cautions that you can't learn all about flogging from a book (and it's true), if you're a novice flogger, this certainly is a good place to start. And if you're a "veteran," there is still lots of valuable information about flogging to be learned.

Joseph divides the book into four main "scenes," each one designed to bring home certain points about flogging. Whether it's an intense scene between a Master and his slave (and discussing ways to achieve that), or a scene between two people who've never played before (illustrating the basics of flogging), a scene between two people that leaves one uncomfortable (educating your partner and negotiation), or even a "toy cleaning scene." (explaining how to clean your floggers). There's also information about flogging "technique," what kind of floggers to buy (including a special subsection about singletails), even a "history" of whipmaking.

Joseph Bean has written a number of excellent books over the years about the leather scene; this book is a wonderful addition to them.
