I have had the immense pleasure of seeing the Bell boys live on three occasions and it's still a kick to hear songs debuted at gigs, in all their full new album glossiness.
As established fans will know, Bell X-1 named themselves after the first plane to break the sound barrier. Listening to 'Flock' may cause a few breakages of its own, mainly from spinning around rooms in giddy delight.
Paul Noonan's voice is as glorious as ever - and with a self conciously more singles oriented feel, listening to 'Flock' is like running down a hill really fast with your coat wrapped round your neck.
Like Travis at their sunniest or Radiohead at their least melancholic, sprinkle with a little of Neil Hannon's leprechaun dust and Bob's yer Dad's brother! Music this lovely should be prescribed on the NHS.
If you don't fall in love with Bell X-1 immediately, you deserve to have your ears confiscated.
The success of former bandmate Damien Rice has meant the bellies have, to a certain extent, been cast into his shadow, but this is absolutely undeserved as Bell x1 are masters of their own craft, and should have far more recognition and respect then thay are currently receiving in the UK, as they soar way above all the identi-kit guitar bands which constantly replace eachother in the charts.
You will love this.
and this album hasn't calmed me down at all. again, bell X1, have created a record that is simply superb. lyrically, they are in a league of their own. they carve out tunes unlike any other band can. they have a strange and, i believe, unique sound. although, on a certain level, they are another guitar band. they are actually so much more. every song on this album is so well made, the melodies are so perfect. i personally love the song 'bad skin day', it just has such an air of giving in. the band can create songs of uplifting joy and songs of grey dispair. they have the best selection of songs yet in this album.
a uniquely superb band. in a genre full of copies they have made something uncopiable.
buy this album.
i think that everybody should buy this, it's not only a brilliant cd but a learning experience. Fantastic Flock!!!
