4.0 out of 5 stars An instrumental album, nice 25 Aug 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is probably the most undefinable album I've ever owned - but this is the second time I've bought it, so it must be good, imo. The first time was soon after its release. I'd never heard of Yamash'ta, hadn't a clue what he played. I was simply thumbing through the new albums in my local shop and was immediately taken in by the cover; I like Japanese art; it was a gatefold sleeve too, opening out to give the full effect. Nowadays no one I know buys a CD entirely on the impressiveness of its cover, so it's left to the music.

Track one, Poker Dice. I can remember the first time I played it, the first time hearing anything by Yamash'ta, was a proper WTF? moment. A brief intro of sheer cacophony. But then silence, and the gentle, climbing riff of a solo vibraphone. On a good sound system, I found this both sublime and intriguing. It builds into a long piece, covering a lot of ground, instruments come in and the tempos change. I suppose it's jazzy, jazz-fusion, avant-garde (in its time), compositional in the classical sense though modern. Instrumental.

Track two, Keep In Lane. A shorter piece. A kind of montage of impressions of different vehicles speeding along a multi-lane highway. Thunderous percussion and vocal chants, overtaken by swifter, clean and brilliant horns, in turn giving way to mellifluous vibes, and back again. This would be the completion of the first side of the original vinyl album.

Track three, Xingu. A live recording of a composition by Morris Pert, the drummer-percussionist in Yamash'ta's collaborating band, Close to the Edge. This is probably the closest the album gets to jazz, but it's a vivacious number, not to be dreaded at all.

Track four, One Way. The final track and another live recording.

I used to own the LP, and I loved it. Surely the CD is just as wonderful? It lives up to the "Product Description" I just read above, on this webpage. Get it! Hear it! Love it!
