BBC Review

Re-cycling a ten-year-old Roni Size riff is about as welcome as a bout of septicemia in most parts these days, but that, in their infinite wisdom is what TM Duke and Robert Luis have done on the first track of this, their first foray away from DJ'ing into recording a full-length original album.

Despite the ill-advised sample from New Forms the opening tracks fizzle and pop in a style reminiscent of the more funky, kids romper room moments from Mr. Scruff's Trouser Jazz album, albeit without being on quite such an intense caffeine and sugar rush.

The duos', 'everything and, hell, the kitchen sink too' approach to different genres works on ''Sneaker Thief'' and ''Elephant Takeover'' but the eclectic bent starts to seem increasingly ill-advised as the initial bongo eyed enthusiasm gives up the ghost in favour of the particularly anemic drum and bass of ''Wouri River''. The downturn continues with the attempt to cover every musical genre under the sun reaching a nadir with the howlingly clumsy segueing of classic calypso balladry into drum and bass.

There's nothing disastrously incompetent here and this is album will be perfectly palatable on a festival loudspeaker, but on closer examination, this just doesn't quite cut it. Stinking sleeve too. If we wanted a picture of an elephant swimming underwater then we'd all have gone to ''Athena'' for a poster ages ago lads. --Rob Crossan

This one kinda snuck up on me. I heard the track 'Last Night' on Rob Da Bank's radio show...it's witty mash up of old Jamaican Mento and full-on DnB just blew me away and I decided to buy the album on the strength of that tune alone...now more and more tracks have grown on me. Didn't realise this was TM Juke collaborating with Robert Luis, and the production is quite different from Juke's more chilled output under that moniker. Ze Zam is a bomb...a heavily processed Samba drum tune which is a real crowd pleaser in the clubs. Their very Tru Thoughtsy re-take on Brown Paper Bag cleverly manages to steer away from DnB and into a Fat Freddy's style slow funk without losing the essence. There's forays into all kinds of 'world' styles...but with the emphasis on the fresh and funky rather than the worthy.

This experimental, but eminently engaging and listenable album has wormed it's way into my affections, and much to my surprise, towards the end of the year has edged into the lead...and is now officially my Album Of 2008...or at least it would have been had I not just found out it was released in 2007!

Yeah I was impressed on the first listen,an impulse buy going on the label previous efforts. The production on all tracks is inventive & really well polished with a heavy bass lines surging through the rythms weather broken beat, afro funk or d n b great album for the summer dance floors got a quality similar to Dj Vadims Sound Catcher without the guest MC's.Get it on vinyl.Do...do...do..it!

Great stuff - new nothing of them before buying. Funky as hell cover of Brown Paper Bag kicks it off followed by an ecletic journey through funk, d+b, dubstep and all round fun, crazy electronica.
