Intelligent sci-fi with a big heart, 19 Jun 2005
** One mild spoiler**If you haven't seen this classic before, you're in for a real treat. After 30 minutes, you'll be thinking "hey! This is /really/ clever!" An hour later you'll be saying "wow! That was beautiful!" Those of you who can dimly remember seeing this gem a quarter of a century ago will be delighted to rediscover it, like a chance meeting with a long lost friend, and acknowledge that it certainly has stood the test of time (no pun /really/ intended). The time travel motif is one of sci-fi's most potent weapons, and rarely has it been expressed with such poignancy and sheer humanity as here. Peter Firth and Caroline Langrishe are nothing short of magnificent here, making the unbelievable believable and generating tons of sexual chemistry as a delightful byproduct. It is also a pleasure to see veteran actors Patrick Magee and Sylvia Coleridge contributing so much to the whole experience. Don't get hung up on the minimal special effects (spot the ZX81 keyboard in Dominick's saucer!) or mono sound. Just revel in a terrific tale which will truly make you think and make you feel great to be alive! Lovely attentions to detail - the holographic musicians performing "classical" music (c 1960's) were a gem and Dominick's confusion when confronted with a real musician in a café was a charming moment. The second and concluding episode - Another Flip for Dominick, whilst not quite matching the perfection of the original, explores time travel paradoxes yet further and has a genuinely moving conclusion. Dominick "rewinding" in order to avoid a row with his lover and the poor au pair bearing the brunt of it each time, was utterly brilliant! Beautiful stuff indeed and a fitting epitaph indeed to the late great visionary Alan Gibson. DVD picture quality is very good, the accompanying booklet is informative and the interview/documentary included on disk 2 is brief but fascinating. Buy it, watch it, love it, then lend it to your friends, so they can love it too and admire your impeccable taste! How I wish I could flip back a few years and still have /my/ 2CV for drives down to Herne Bay!
