Amazon.co.uk Review

If your kids enjoy a good book, but you still have trouble getting them to read, then try turning on your DS instead. This unique interactive adventure contains all six of Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl books, all on a single cartridge and featuring some amazing multimedia additions.

Experience Artemis Fowl's world in a whole new way.
Each chapter has a quick reminder of previous events.
Discover real world facts related to the story.
Can you decipher the hidden code to unlock new extras?

Holding the DS vertically like a book you can turn pages simply by flicking the stylus across the touchscreen. Adults and children can read together and use the special in-built hyperlinks to access relevant pictures, sounds and character and location information.

Eagle-eyed kids can also search for special code notes hidden on each page - once they're all collected it's a race to decipher their meaning and unlock a whole two extra stories, as well as interviews with the author and Artemis Fowl himself. All kids love to read, this just helps them to enjoy the experience even more.

Key Features
  • Six of the best: Includes six whole books: Artemis Fowl, The Arctic Incident, The Eternity Code, The Opal Deception, The Lost Colony and Artemis Fowl and the Time Paradox.
  • Magic book: Special multimedia hyperlinks let you access character information, images and sounds from each book as you read.
  • Hidden extras: Unlock extra content and stories by searching for and deciphering the code notes hidden on special pages.
  • Progress tracker: Parents can track exactly how much kids have read while special quizzes test to see how much they've taken in.
  • Share and learn: Share sample chapters with a friend via the wireless connection and you can unlock extra bonus content for yourself.

Fun:
Hello everyone!
I own three Flips titles for the DS
and I think these interactive book collections of about 6-8 books
are a fantastic way of presenting books to both children and adults
interessted in reading children books.
For my much more detailed review, please read my review
for Flips: Enid Blyton - The Faraway Tree Stories!

Note: My reviews are mainly about the Flips Book series as interactive books,
not about the different books and their contents.

In my opinion the Nintendo DS is a most practical device for reading books
without backpain because of holding heavy books
and I can't wait for more Flips titles to be released!

I hope for the Harry Potter books and The lord Of The Rings Trilogy as Flips!

I got this today for my daughter, who loves to read but has no space left on her bookshelf. It was so good I just came back to get her the Percy Jackson and Too Ghoul for School collections, freeing up an entire shelf of her bookcase in exchange for three tiny cards. These may not be overly appealing for teens, since the interactive parts are aimed at a younger audience, but for the under 14s I think you couldn't find a better way to get a book-shy kid into reading. And you get six books for less than the price of two. Couldn't be better!

Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl books really defy an adequate description. To say they're about fairies, dwarves, elves, trolls and other 'fictitious' creatures just does them no justice at all.

These are definitely NOT the creatures from the old fashioned fairy fantasy lands of yore but are the high tech creatures whose technical abilities make mankind look pretty lame by comparison.

As for who exactly Artemis Fowl is then I'd simply say either by the DS 'game' (although calling it a game is not doing it justice) or buy the first book "Artemis Fowl" as a starting point and go from there.

The conceptualisation the characters and the plot lines are way and above that of many more respected works of a more adult genre.
Young children wouldn't like these stories, at least I dubt that they would but young adults should find them far more engrossing.
Far older adults will also, I'm sure find the stories absorbing and, in this format, are a good reason alone to treat yourself to a DSi
