Perfect for a cozy afternoon

I picked up Fatal Fixer-Upper, the first book in this series, as I was beginning an extensive fixer-upper project of my own. I've enjoyed the four previous titles in the series and found Flipped Out to be the best one yet.
The main character, Avery, is a transplanted New Yorker who fell in love with Maine and her contractor boyfriend. Now she and boyfriend Derek are renovating another property. The projects that Avery concocts are fun and fit her flirty personality. The addition of the film-crew and the home renovation show deadline keep the story moving and give lots to consider when wondering who committed the crime.
The characters who appear in all of the books are fully-drawn and likable. Avery and Derek's friends seem like the kind of people that would make living in a new place an adventure. Even Derek's snarky ex-wife is well-written and multi-faceted. The new characters introduced in Flipped Out are also more than caricatures.
The mystery balances nicely with the romance and the work of renovating a home. Bentley also does a wonderful job of reminding readers of the other books how the characters got to where they are today without overwhelming the story. I don't think a reader would have to read the first four to follow the action in Flipped Out, but reading this one will surely make a reader pick up the other four.
Though I had suspicions, and figured out most of the clues, I didn't know who had committed the crime for sure until it was revealed. That alone makes Jennie Bentley's book worth the read.
The projects in the back of the book are perfect for both beginners and those with a little more experience.
I highly recommend Flipped Out to fans of cozy mysteries and to all those brave enough to renovate anything.

A great book

This is the fifth book in the Do It Yourself Mystery series. And a great addition it is, too.
I have really enjoyed all the books in this series and this was no exception. Some books grab you on page one and this one did just that.
Avery and Derek are back on the mainland renovating the home of a local TV personality and the fiancee of Derek's ex wife, Melissa. This renovation is going to be taped for showing on a DIY tV show. The crew has arrived and Avery and Derek are doing a walk thru of the house and getting a timeline worked out for the filming. The next morning Avery and Derek arrive at the home to begin working and find that the houseowner has been killed, with what appears to have been a scewdriver. Quite naturally suspicion falls on Melissa. Needless to say that there is no love lost between Avery and Melissa, but Avery feels that she is not the killer. Then it is learned that the production manager has received notes stating: "I know what you did". In fact the victim had received on. But then, nobody really knows anything bout the production crew. Besides, the show interviewer had recieved a nasty electrical shock on previous shoot. Maybe someone has it in for the TV show.
Avery and Derek have the hands full trying to find out who and why the owner was killed. After all the production company is only going to be around for a week.
I thought it was a well detailed story, with excellent plotting. One thing, that is important to me, Bentley skillfully blended in the backstory in this book, too.

I LOVE THIS SERIES!

This has become my favorite book in the series. The victim was surprising and there are a wide variety of suspects. Jennie is a first class storyteller, she has the way to tell a cozy mystery "nailed". The characters have grown, the setting is wonderful and using a television home improvement show is contemporary, the the mystery as always is multifaceted and truly entertaining.
Flipped Out is the perfect escape into a good book.
