Product Description

Is Getting There Really Half the Fun?The 26 real-life stories in this extraordinary collection explore the complexities, delights and insights of surface travel, from walking to pedal boating, from camels to cargo ships and anything from two to four wheels - or no wheels at all. Ever wondered just how far a tuk-tuk can take you? Who do you call when the ice cracks as you're walking across the Bering Straits? Do you know how long it takes to rollerblade across the US? Ever considered riding a pizza-delivery bike through South America?
Some of these writers explore a single destination, be it Oman, Japan or Italy, while others cross whole continents or circumnavigate the world. This inspiring and eclectic anthology includes contributions from well-known travel writers such as Tony Wheeler and Rory Stewart, environmentally responsible travel-bloggers, some favorite Lonely Planet authors and record-setting expeditioners. So sit back, relax and let your imagination do the flying.

Flying has become one of the most unpleasant ways to travelling (even though it remains the most convenient for most of us) The long queues to check-in, the queues to go through passport control, then more queueing at security. ("Please remove your shoes, madam, and your jacket, and your necklace...") Ah, yes, the joys of airports. It's not surprising that more and more people are choosing to find other ways of visiting new place.

Flightless is a collection of 26 journeys recording the delights (and sometimes the frustrations) of surface travel. There is the challenge of cyclists trying to cross borders in the Middle East, a slightly nutty pair of women driving a tuk-tuk from Thailand to Britain, Rory Stewart looking for dervishes as he hikes across Pakistan and a young backpacker hitchhiking across Australia.

I am convinced you are much more "in touch" with a country if you make your way around it overland rather than hop from one airconditioned airport to the next.

This is super collection with lots of lovely travel stories to dip into.

This is a compilation of travel adventures across the globe from a number of different authors. As should be expected some stories are better than others and some authors appeal more than others. Overall, a very nice book. Easy reading and wetting ones appetite for both literature and adventure!!

Having read Peter Moore's 'Vroom with a View', when it was published a few years ago, I was pleased to se that the much shortened 'highlights' of that story had been selected as the opening chapter for this collection of true, a very inspirational, travelling stories.

There's a real mix here; with a the theme that 'taking to the air' doesn't have to be the answer. Great (the greatest?) adventures can be had in the strangest of places, both in exotic, far flung places, and also right outside your front-door.

I don't want to give anything away, about the details of the trips, but there's a fair selection of wheeled, paddled and foot-power; to name only a very few.

The chapters are short, but will leave you immersed, dripping with more than a little inspiration.

Yes, great overland trips seem like strange (crazy?), exotic, untangible things, but these people have done it, and with heart and head, anyone can find adventure as well.

Brilliant stuff, that's got me searching to find more tales from a spectrum of contributors.
