Product Description

How can a funeral of an old soldier in Canada have any links with some momentous events in war torn Europe of the 1940s? For one fortunate journalist, in the right place at the right time, the opportunity to find out presented itself on a very cold day in Ontario in 2003.

A chance meeting with the elderly widow revealed a past that at first seemed to incredible to be true. “Did you know I flew Spitfires in 1943?” the widow asked the young woman. However, as she came to know the widow and learned her story, she came to believe her amazing tale.

With the widow’s consent, the journalist began her biography, on condition that she publish the book after the elderly lady’s death.

The story is an amazing one, as the lady believed herself to be male up to 1943. As a young fighter pilot in the RAF, young Stephen Wilkie flew and fought against the Luftwaffe. Having shot down many enemy planes, he was eventually shot down and captured by the Germans in occupied France. Transferred to a POW camp in eastern Germany, young Stephen plans a daring escape. His plan is to disguise himself as a girl and slip out after a camp play, to which the German guards were invited.

However, as the escape preparations are underway, Stephen's body has plans of its own, as the young man changes slowly, but irreversibly, into a young woman.

Not the healthiest place to experience such a change.

Getting out was just the start of a fantastic and sometimes terrifying adventure. To make matters worse, the young woman falls in love with an enemy officer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jo Ann, 11 Jan 2012

i read stories similar to this one, it turns out it was the same author early draft, the completed work is very good and more polished, very good for a war time story

once again it leaves a lot of areas that are open to add chapters too.

hope the author will add to the story

5.0 out of 5 stars More twists and turns than a rollercoaster, 19 May 2011

You can count on Tanya Allan to write an exciting, romantic well-constructed and action-packed war novel that really holds your interest. At least in the novels I've read so far by Ms. Allan, you can also rely on the author to tell a tale about a slight young man, who, as the result of a strange confluence of events, gets so deeply in touch with his feminine side, that he mysteriously and rapidly transmogrifies to become a female. Then, within weeks of doing so, he not only adopts a complete female gender role, he becomes a woman in every sense of the word.

Additionally, in Ms. Allen's novels, you can expect this all to happen in the context of the Second World War, where the newly formed heroine transforms from a mere male hero in the British Armed Forces to a genuine uberheroine of the Third Reich. Not only does she then acquire as her beau a "regular guy" German officer, she almost single-handedly turns the War around, bringing the Axis powers to their knees through chicanery and the adept use of her newly acquired feminine powers.

Along the way, she spends some time as a prisoner in a German POW camp, initially as a male but with an internal female about to bloom, the prison camp perhaps symbolic of the soon-to-emerge female trapped in its male form. In her action-packed journeys around Europe, she meets a varied, famous and infamous cast of characters from Dwight D. Eisenhower, to a reformed Dr. Mengele type who provides a "final solution" to her gender issues, to the Fuehrer himself. And if that's not enough, our heroine eventually wears and honors the uniforms of three different countries! Sounds far fetched, doesn't it? Well, somehow Ms. Allen makes it all work.

Set in a context of Spitfires, Messerschmitts, dogfights, the SS, weaponry of all sorts and foreign intrigue galore, this novel is a page turner. For as many times and ways as the tale of gender transformation is told, it is never too many times for me, particularly related by this fine author.
