How can a funeral of an old soldier in Canada have any links with some momentous events in war torn Europe of the 1940s? For one fortunate journalist, in the right place at the right time, the opportunity to find out presented itself on a very cold day in Ontario in 2003.
A chance meeting with the elderly widow revealed a past that at first seemed to incredible to be true. “Did you know I flew Spitfires in 1943?” the widow asked the young woman. However, as she came to know the widow and learned her story, she came to believe her amazing tale.
With the widow’s consent, the journalist began her biography, on condition that she publish the book after the elderly lady’s death.
The story is an amazing one, as the lady believed herself to be male up to 1943. As a young fighter pilot in the RAF, young Stephen Wilkie flew and fought against the Luftwaffe. Having shot down many enemy planes, he was eventually shot down and captured by the Germans in occupied France. Transferred to a POW camp in eastern Germany, young Stephen plans a daring escape. His plan is to disguise himself as a girl and slip out after a camp play, to which the German guards were invited.
However, as the escape preparations are underway, Stephen's body has plans of its own, as the young man changes slowly, but irreversibly, into a young woman.
Not the healthiest place to experience such a change.
Getting out was just the start of a fantastic and sometimes terrifying adventure. To make matters worse, the young woman falls in love with an enemy officer.
