5.0 out of 5 stars the best yet 28 Mar 2001
By Mrs. K. A. Wheatley TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I loved this book, not only because it opened up the dark and murky world of Mallory's past, which I've been gagging to know about for ages, but because it had real heart to it. It was as if O'Connell had suddenly got into flow. Everything fits together beautifully, the story is gripping the atmosphere is great. She really utilises the deep south freak show aspect of the setting and the macabre carnival in the final scenes is a real show stopper. Dramatic, gutsy and compelling.

I read this book quite a while ago. I'm a big fan of the Kathy Mallory stories...this is the book that explains why she is such an extraordinary character - wilful, a trifle psychotic, feral even, but just about staying on the right side of the law. What she endured as a child was certainly gruesome enough to have marked her for life, what happens to her mother is hellish....full marks to the author of coming up with such an exceptional storyline.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best yet 21 Aug 2002

I have all the Carol O'Connell books and this is my favourite - the best Mallory book yet. The insight into how she got to where she is and who she is was brilliant. We truly come to know how Mallory came to be.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent continuation of the Mallory saga 27 Nov 1999

Format:Mass Market Paperback
Mallory Rocks! Carol O'Connell writes another wicked Mallory story, and she definitley keeps you on the edge of your seat right until the end of the story. Yet again, you get to the end, and you want it to keep going. Like Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta, you wince when you think about this series coming to an end. How can the Mallory character end? I hope it doesn't end. I want to meet her - because she sounds like a hard-case. For light hearted entertainment, it doesn't get any better!

4.0 out of 5 stars A slightly dischordant note 30 May 2000
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Although I've enjoyed the Mallory series, I am still a little bit dubious about the character. I found the repetitive assertions of Mallory's hardness increasingly irritating. Too many times characters backed down from simply a steely stare from our heroine...as if! Not enough genuine examples of how her deeds could have lead hardened cops and criminals to find her so threatening.

5.0 out of 5 stars The end to the circle - 19 April 2000
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Love this book - forth in the series and you realise all the different story lines that have been pulled together in this concluding story. Prefered this set of books to Cornwell who gets a bit repertitive after a while - this is full of twists and turns and great insight into the characters.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great author let down by appalling editing 14 Feb 2012
By MH
Format:Kindle Edition
I enjoy Carol O Connell's work, but the editing in this kindle edition is woefully inadequate. It is full of mistakes that make part of the text unintelligible and downright annoying: characters' names are misspelt beyond recognition causing confusion, italic text appears at random, the dog has to 'see the pet' (should read 'vet' !!), etc. Am finishing the book because I've started it but would like a refund from Amazon for such a poor quality product.
